Started my morning tired as usual, went to purchase paints for my commissioned paintings and next up was the warm room, I’ve never felt so safe and comfortable this way, I’m proud of my girl @ruhuoma.od was a wonderful way to unwind, and I met a lot of beautiful and amazing ladies. Cheers to the warm room.🥳🥳

Ibiebe symbols are a modern symbol of ideographs created by the renowned artist and printmaker @bruce_onobrakpeya and it is rooted in Urhobo proverbs and heritage. They are visual codes that represents specific sounds and aids communication.
I came across it over two months ago and I’m currently understudying them so instead of using Nsibidi symbols and indigo dye, I replaced them with Ibiebe and Turmeric.

In 2019 when I did my Industrial Training, I realized that the artisans never threw away some dye baths, they just added it to their big drum of dye.
Colors like Indigo, Purple, Green, Navyblue, Wine (sometimes) and Black. They said because it had a strong preservative threshold they don’t dispose it but instead used it to dilute very hot dye baths for batik - instead of using normal cold water. For the 7 months I was with them, I never saw them changed the bath, they just added until they couldn’t anymore.

Now I preserve dye baths - Purple & Navyblue and Black (I don’t have a lot of drums), I change it regularly but this has been preserved since February and it’s my first time seeing this.

So to my textile artists in the house, what could this mean?

P.S I used this like that and it did what it was supposed to do, but I’m curious.

A year ago today, I was packing my bags and preparing to leave a place I had started to call home, to return home. I had a plan, a dream, and savings from the 17 months I spent there. Without prior notice or a backup plan, I moved back home to build my studio.

A lot has happened in the past year. The studio isn’t where I want it to be yet, but when I look at everything I’ve been able to do single-handedly, I can’t help but feel proud. I’ve come a long way.

In honour of the community that welcomed me back, I’m starting THE WARM ROOM — a safe space for women in Port Harcourt who love art, creativity, and meaningful conversations.
