I had so much fun this weekend with my sisters and cousin at the #houstonrodeo on #BlackHeritageDay. I got to see some of my favorite childhood artist all on one stage. And the BEST part is that they are all Houston legends! Well there were a couple of newbies like #tobenwigwe & #ThatGirlLayLay.
#SlimThug was vibing through “Thug” in a black cowboy hat. #PaulWall, whose grill-filled grin encapsulated the evening, and #BigPokey followed with “Sittin’ Sidewayz.” Celeb jeweler #JohnnyDang even got his moment to shine. Slim and Paul then linked up for “Still Tippin’.”

An unannounced #Chamillionaire amped the energy even higher with “Ridin’,” a song he took to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006. It’s a deceptively joyous anthem for the disenfranchised. (“Thinkin’ they’ll catch me on the wrong well keep tryin’/’Cause they denyin’ that it’s racial profiling.”)

As Houston as it all was, the middle run of the show felt like peak H-town. #LilFlip’s vibrant “The Way We Ball” and “Sunshine.” #LilKeke leaning into the “Southside” dance. #ESG taking it back with “Swangin’ and Bangin’.” #ZRO lookin sharp in a pinstriped suit, commanded the stage during “Mo City Don.” And a line of candy-colored slabs parading on the dirt floor.

There was grown-folks R&B from #Htown (“Knockin’ Boots”); #FrankieJ and #BabyBash (“Suga Suga”); and #LetoyaLuckett, gorgeous in white, sparking knee high boots and on her elegant hit “Torn.” Luckett and Paul Wall, both celebrating birthdays, were serenaded by the crowd.

#DevintheDude and #WillieD of the #GetoBoys pulled up. Tobe Nwigwe charged through “Fye Fye” alongside a cadre of dancers. Bun returned to close things out with #UGK classics, eventually joined by all the evening’s performers.

There were frequent dedications to the late #DJScrew, #FatPat, #BigMoe and #PimpC.

It was, for anyone born and raised in the city, a spectacular sight to behold. And it ended too soon.

“This ain’t Versuz, and this ain’t the Super Bowl. This is the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, baby,” Bun said. He was joined onstage by his musical family for a final goodbye, and tears streamed down his face.

I made these shirts to honor my beloved father that left this Earth 1 yr ago today.
He was always by my side as a little girl even though things weren't so easy for him to stay around. And when my mother passed 7 years ago he became my best friend and we talked nearly every day... Words can't describe how precious he was not only to me but to his community. He always provided food for those in need and acts of service was his daily. Everything he did and said was 🤍 centered and pure. I miss you my hero and heart.
