It was a joy to meet @therealmattyvickz today who has been enthusiastic and supportive of @stan.munro.performer and my book ‘Stan Munro: Secrets of a Showbiz Dame’.

We enjoyed a delicious lunch at @nessasoho in Soho augmented by his delightful company. He kindly asked me to sign his copy of our book that he had already purchased which I was of course more than happy to do. A beautiful afternoon.

Please take a leaf out of Matty’s book and never be reluctant to approach me to talk about our book or to ask me to sign a copy. Readers and aspiring writers have been a rewarding and a crucial part of our journey. They have helped shape our success.

While writing the book I wrote to a few authors for advice. Most were very happy to give advice. Some generously so. However, a couple I never heard back from including an Australian author whose work I admired. Not someone who is particularly famous but is known and I presume respected in LGBTQIA+/queer circles.

I will never be that person. His book went straight to the charity shop. I always believe in giving something back and helping others when I can whether it’s advice for would-be authors or granting permission for my x-rays to be used to teach medical students. We all need a leg up from time to time.

Named after Vanessa Bell, the Bloomsbury painter her friends called Nessa, this Soho corner site carries that same bohemian, creative spirit into its cooking. Modern British, led by the seasons & the live fire grill, & we were in to work our way through the weekend brunch menu.

We opened with the Nutbourne tomato, ricotta, torn croutons, basil & nasturtium. Fresh, sweet & properly ripe, it is the kind of plate that wakes the palate up & sets the tone for everything after.

Onto the mains & the fried chicken burger with a side of chips did exactly what it should. The hot sauce brings a real kick, the American cheese & pickles cool it back down, & the chicken is crisp on the outside while staying tender underneath.

But the star of the show was the roasted salt marsh lamb with spring carrots, broad beans & sea beets. A seriously impressive plate, blushing pink, full of flavour & aesthetically stunning. Juicy lamb balanced against fresh seasonal veg that tied the whole thing together.

Desserts are a must. The banana French toast was sensational & the highlight of the sweet course, perfectly charred with a light, fluffy centre, a beautifully judged banana & caramelised pecans in maple syrup. Alongside it the Newlands strawberry Eton mess, pink peppercorn meringue & strawberry caviar, all washed down with an espresso.

Service was excellent throughout, from front of house to our servers, friendly, knowledgeable & genuinely welcoming. The dining room is light, airy & handsome, & while we came for brunch this is a date spot at any hour, whether that is a slow weekend start or a long dinner that quietly turns into one more drink.

If you’re looking for your next date night spot, do it properly. Book a table at Nessa, ask for the dining room, order the roasted salt marsh lamb, then leave room for the banana French toast.

Sharing plates & great conversation 🤎

Had a gorgeous dinner @nessasoho & I like to think you can always tell a lot from a place by their bread and their soda bread was unreal! 👀

Serving British produce but elevated… standouts were definitely the rolled oats soda bread, the Hake which was cooked to perfection, the truffle layered potatoes & tomato salad!

Cannot recommend enough for a date night or catch up with friends as the the ambience is cosy & low lit! ✨

🍜 Noodle Inn Soho 10/10 ⭐️ Definitely recommend!

☕ Little Hudson Cafe 6.5/10. The food was okay, but the service really said “meh.” 😭

🥗 HG Soho 100,000/10!!! Healthy, delicious and SO fresh. 💚

🌶️ Rosa’s Thai Greenwich 8/10. Great variety if you’re a fan of Thai food!

🥞 TAB X TAB, Westbourne Grove 9/10. One of the best places for brunch in London! 🤌

🍛 Shemroon Kitchen, Silvertown 12/10!!! Takeaway only, but honestly one of the spots to know if you’re looking for Persian food in East London. 🔥

🥩 Swiss Butter 9/10. Best value for money! 💸

🍕 Japes Pizza, Greenwich 8.5/10. A solid choice if you’re around the Cutty Sark/Greenwich area.

🍽️ Nessa Soho 9/10. Really good food, but definitely on the pricier side.

🥩 Flat Iron London Bridge 9/10. Delicious food, great wine & unreal value for money! 🍷

🍔 Truffle Burger, Soho 7/10. Not bad, but not amazing either. The truffle parmesan fries were definitely the highlight! 🍟
