@neuf0lk is the brain child of curator and artist, Max Kauffman, based in Denver, CO. I love working with Max, as he always wants my slightly wierd art, or pieces that make people think and ponder!
.
Curators are so important to the art world as they are tastemakers, but also bring art to communities and viewers who need to see art to remind them they are alive, especially as freedom of expression becomes even more sacred in this era.
.
You can support curators and gallerists by visiting their spaces, purchasing from them, and joining their newsletters to keep you connected! Artists can be independent, yes, but a strong art community places value on arts non-profits, museums, galleries, curators AND artists!
.
So check out @neuf0lk ! These ceramic pieces and a few watercolor prints will be available for a limited time on the Neufolk website! Link in my bio linktree or visit @neuf0lk

I’m honored to have written this article about a generative period in Denver’s arts and culture history at Evans School in the @goldentriangleofdenver.
//
I first stepped through the schoolhouse doors as a lost writer waiting to see what a studio space could bring me and my practice and I’m grateful to @thepopeelopes and @miranda_harp for bringing me into the fold. More recently, I came back to the building as a freelance journalist to chat with incredible folks doing even more phenomenal things.
//
When word came about Evans School’s very last Open Studios and Art Market, I knew I had to write about what the space has meant for artists and what will happen to them and their building moving forward. I wanted to better understand the parameters of this physical space and the expansiveness it’s come to symbolize in our arts community in such a short period of time. What resulted were enlightening conversations and hope-filled sadness, a mix I think we all feel in many ways these days.
//
Huge thanks to @nataliehegert and @obscuratorial at @swcontemporary for accepting my pitch and shepherding the article. I’m grateful to @darlene____________ for welcoming me into her studio space and sharing the vulnerability of being an artist in this city, and to @a_damn_guitar for his astute and witty observations. Thank you to @_sharifa_ of @denverdigerati and @lmartorano of @redlinedenver for hopping on the phone to share their experiences, and thank you to @marygraceart, @neuf0lk, @jennifermaravillas, @transformingmilkintomilk, and so many others for sharing their images and perspectives.
//
I hope this article sparks some kind of dialogue between developers and investors and art institutions, between the Denver city government and @mikejohnstonco and local artists. We owe it to our community to create more spaces like Evans School.

Art movements are born from communities. They don’t simply emerge as a movement; they begin with a group of like-minded individuals coming together at a specific moment in time. These artists share struggles, influence one another’s work, and collectively define what it means to be human in their era.

Take the abstract expression in mid-20th century, for example. Clyfford Still and his contemporaries thrived in this movement for just a few years, yet those artists didn’t create in isolation. They were in the right place at the right time, connecting deeply and pushing the boundaries of art together. This dynamic mirrors what we’re experiencing at the Evans School across the street.

As practicing artists in this moment in time, we recognize that we’re living through a movement ourselves. Many art movements are fleeting, often lasting just a few years before they transform into something new. Change is a constant, and while it’s exciting to witness Denver’s evolution as an art community, we also acknowledge the challenges artists face—rising rents and limited resources often force them to relocate and ultimately break up these creative networks that we’ve worked so hard to build.

The Evans School movement is approaching its conclusion, and we will undoubtedly look back at this time fondly. It’s essential to consider what’s next and how this creative community will evolve. Just like the iconic music scene in Laurel Canyon during the 60s, which gave us legends like the Eagles and Joni Mitchell in a brief but impactful burst of creativity, our artistic community is at a crossroads.

Let’s reflect on how artists here organized around their needs for space and support, building an affordable community for artists that nurtured collaboration and creativity, while also connecting the community at large with our work. As we move forward, we’re excited to see what comes next and how this movement will shape the future of art in Denver. Join us in celebrating this journey! #ArtMovement #DenverArt #CommunityCreativity

Clip from the artist talk I did at Neu Folk/Room 220 for my show “…Best Day Ever”.
Video taken by @brandon.opalka still taken by @tobiasfike.

This section of the talk was me explaining some of my aesthetic philosophy which draws heavily on ideas put forth by Steven Kaltenbach about the nature of the role of art as a type of communicative influence.
Thanks to @isometricles for moderating the discussion, and thanks to @brandon.opalka and @wittybanterism for hosting. It was good fun.

Being curators has never been easier!

Please join us at the Evans School this Saturday 6-9 pm outside of room 220 to see how this group of artists explore the edges of early Artificial Intelligence as a tool in their individual art practices

Thanks so much @walsenburg_porchfest and @neuf0lk for having @risafriedman and I for this year’s wonderful mural event. We had an absolute blast!

If you want to see our completed piece, it’s on the back side of @walsenburgsoapbox608. I recommend stopping in around front too, for some of the soap from Shari. She and her products are amazing.

Shoutout to @foxwalsenburg and @wittybanterism for all the help around town.

There’s lots of other new art around town including @birdseedanthony, @mike_strescino, @wellingtonprojects, @leondelasflorez, @wittybanterism and @yultek_

Let us know if you stop by! All of the photos we used were taken around Walsenburg, so you can try and spot some of the locations around town.

What are you up to this holiday weekend?

Come join us as we wheat paste the walls of Walsenburg as part of @walsenburg_porchfest curated by @neufOlk @wittybanterism this SATURDAY 5/25. The event combines music and art with community-wide spring cleaning, allowing visitors to wander between yard sales, pop-up concerts and wall-sized works in progress.

We’re already here, so come hang! We’ve used all local Walsenburg photos, so it’ll be a little treasure hunt to see if you can ID our photo locations.
