🔴 UKW EDITION 2024 / MOVIE

Mural No 15/2024 – Hood Loh
"Switch" by Swiss street art duo @nevercrew at Grönhoffstrasse 11 for openair museum @urbaner_kunstraum_wuppertal

📸 @collab.cologne

The globally renowned Swiss street art duo Nevercrew usually explores the delicate tension between humans, nature, and civilization in their work. In Wuppertal-Unterbarmen, they showcase a giant elephant floating in a glass music box directly above the famous suspension railway (Schwebebahn).

The unbelievable part: The artists knew absolutely nothing about the Wuppertal legend of Tuffi the elephant beforehand! They only realized it once they were on site in Wuppertal – the motif was a complete coincidence! And to top it off, there is a Hindu temple right behind the artwork, in whose culture the elephant – in the form of the figure Ganesha – is highly revered. So, Tuffi and Ganesha all in one!

For us, this is the perfect bridge to our conversation with the association for the blind: The glass dome separates the elephant from its environment and restricts its movement. This is the daily reality for visually impaired people: They navigate every single day within a glass dome that we cannot see, but whose barriers blind people have to overcome constantly.

🔴 UKW EDITION 2024/ ARTIST

NEVERCREW (Luzern, Switzerland)
The international Swiss artist duo Nevercrew belongs to the most influential figures of the worldwide street art scene. 🌍✨

They combine masterful photorealism with precise, graphic structures. At the center of their work is almost always the sensitive, often disturbed relationship between man and nature.

They are famous for their monumental depictions of endangered animal species such as whales or polar bears, which they stage in surreal, seemingly artificial worlds to draw attention to climate change and environmental problems. 🐻‍❄️🐋

In Wuppertal they left behind the mural "Switch" in the Loh quarter. Typical for the duo, the work symbolizes the fragile balance between nature and city – the invisible "glass dome" that often separates us from reality or stands for the invisible obstacles in life.
