I curated a new show on a topic that's very personal to me -- this exhibition of all women artists explores theme of women's unrecognized labor, in the home, in relationships, in the workplace, and in society. The exhibition combines painting, mixed media, and performance for one night only at Ketchup City Creative, one of Pittsburgh's woman-led creative spaces.

💥 Featuring @akudzweelsiechiwa @moondropflowerart @emily.krill @oco.art @newbond2022 @purple_room_fine_art 💥

📍 Ketchup City Creative, 612 Main Street
📅 October 17, 6PM-9PM

I wrote “ART DECO” after a couple years of being inspired by ART that lives all around us.
This piece by Heather Bond has been up in my home alongside other Art and I’m adding more and more. I am inspired by the way she thinks and commits to the vision in her mind. I wake up and see Beauty all around me. I acknowledge it, no matter what the weak heart says because the weak heart will force you to focus on what brings you down and not what uplifts you. SEEN?

🖼️ 3 Emerging Artists to Watch in Pittsburgh🖼️

Though we all love to go to museums and learn about the greats of days past, supporting emerging artists in your community by going to gallery shows, purchasing work (that’s often at a more affordable price point), and following them on social media is a rewarding way to learn about Pittsburgh’s art scene. Here are three local artists living and working in Pittsburgh whose work we think is both relevant and inspiring.

I ain't no art critic and whatever I say here will simply do a disservice to this incredible and gorgeous artist friend of mine @newbond2022 go check her art pieces out, buy them or commission a piece from her. Her mixed media and dangerous approach to multi-techniques is pushing the envelope of modern subversive art (and that's my pseudo critic)

Check it oout!

Heather Bond has created 2 series of paintings at COMB. since we opened. 🖼️ She is a multidisciplinary artist that uses painting, collaging and other mediums to create her art. 💛

COMB. was looking for a collection that represented feminine divinity by pulling in elements from nature. A calming form of chaos is the feeling we wanted the pieces to represent. She created that and so much more. 🫶

Please come in to check out Venus and the many other pieces that fit into this collection. Support local artist and give Heather a follow 🖤

Days like today are sacred to me. Anytime I can be in my studio creating I am happy. Since poverty keeps getting in the way of my art career, I cherish every moment I can paint. Since I’ve been exploring some of my musical influences, I wanted to take a minute and shout out to some creatives here in Pittsburgh that inspire me. If it wasn’t for social media I probably wouldn’t have ever found their work. I am so happy to be in a city with so many amazing people, most of whom I’ve never met in person. #thankyou #pittsburghartists #localart #412art

I got my hair cut for the first time in 3 years @comb.pgh yesterday. It was a beautiful way to see myself differently and let go of the past—after I met stylist B Devey I knew that this was the right place to get a haircut. B did an amazing job—for me, hair is so connected to femininity, power, and sense of self and I’m so happy with this cut styling. Plus was so special to have @newbond2022 in the background💥✂️

Sort of obsessed with @newbond2022’s paintings @comb.pgh. I just wrote about them for @petrichorpgh but they get a main account post too because they’re just so damn good.

This show is only up through this Sunday, but when I met mixed media artist Heather Bond I got that jolt of electricity you sometimes get as a critic where you just HAVE to write about it. So I did.

“Bond is interested in themes of wealth, disparity, and the idea of “selling your soul.” Bond’s work speaks to how for women, our selves can be constructed of materials—think Hole’s “Doll Parts” or the film The Love Witch. Women have to build up our senses of self using aesthetics in makeup, hair, clothing, and often those aesthetic messages are profoundly confusing. It’s as if you’re always putting on a costume. Bond takes abstract mixed media and neo-expressionist techniques associated often with Basquiat or figures of the like and puts a feminine touch on it. The scene that pioneered and popularized many of those techniques was a very masculine-driven one, but mixed media has a huge potential to speak to women’s spiritual, psychological, and emotional issues.

Many of Bond’s paintings remind me of Barbara Kruger or Jenny Holzer with their use of evocative text phrases and strong aesthetic sensibilities. Unlike many other mixed media artists, Bond uses natural materials like pine branches, shells, and flowers that decay over time within her collages. “The beauty industry is telling us ‘don’t age,’ but we have to accept decay,” she said. There’s something really subversive about seeing that message in a space dedicated to beauty through hairstyling.”

Read about how Bond used a pet’s ashes as one of her collage materials and more juicy details at petrichorpittsburgh.com. Show is up @comb.pgh and Heather is giving tours thru this weekend—work is also all for sale and very affordable!
