A nor’easter is bringing plenty of rain and some serious wind to the Hudson Valley this weekend — but Newburgh Open Studios is still happening Saturday and Sunday from noon–6pm. Inviting all art lovers to spend some time in Newburgh, NY this weekend! @newburghopenstudios is this Saturday and Sunday September 26 and 27. There will be some amazing art to see in studios across Newburgh, and I encourage everyone to plan a trip to check it out. I will have some new drawings, paintings and sculpture in a group show @beekmanartsclub at 318 Grand Street. Please stop by to visit the garden, have some snacks, and see the beautiful works of @gemmakahng @ayauekawa and me. Special thanks to @newburghartguy for all of the work that goes into making @newburghopenstudios happen! 🙏🫶 Embodied Creatures Beekman Arts Club Newburgh presents Embodied Creatures; an exhibition of self portraiture by artists’ Gemma Kahng, Aya Uekawa and Joseph Ayers. The posthumous work of celebrated Newburgh artist Gerardo Castro is on view through August 29 in “Catching Fire: resilient alchemies in a burning world”. @gcastroart Garardo’s work will be introduced by Michael Gabor on August 16, 2:00-3:30PM, as part of a gallery walkthrough with curator @mcnulty_alison and three other exhibiting artists. As Gerardo’s life partner and co-founder and co-owner of Newburgh Art Supply @newburghartguy & Newburgh Open Studios @newburghopenstudios , Michael brings an intimate knowledge of Gerardo’s practice. Gerardo wrote about two bodies of work represented in the exhibition: “Fire Indigo Indigo is associated in many cultures with magical and spiritual rituals – probably because of the processes of change it goes through which looks dull green in a vat, emerging into the air- transformed to a vivid blue. Enslaved Africans carried the knowledge of indigo cultivation to the United States, and in the 1700s, the profits from indigo outpaced those of sugar and cotton. Through simple forms and a straightforward presentation I strive to present the viewer with a color so rich that they are entranced by “burnings” and examine all that lies within a color’s substance. Powerful and dignified, indigo conveys integrity and deep sincerity. Spiritual Fire Emanationism is a cosmological theory which asserts that all things “flow” from an underlying principle or reality, usually called the Absolute or Godhead. Any teachings which involve emanation are usually in opposition to “creation out of nothing” as emanation advocates that everything has always existed and has not been “created” from nothing. We ignorantly believe in the adequacy and assumption that what we don’t see does not exist.
