POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Revisiting the Primary Bedroom I designed for the 2022 @brooklynshowhouse I look forward to visiting this year's iteration. I wanted to design a space which would both reflect and augment the fantastical experiences one might encounter in one’s dream life. I first looked to the Surrealist art movement for inspiration, incorporating such elements as trompe l’oeil, plays on the human form, and absurdist juxtapositions into my design. Surrealism’s progression coincided with that of the French Art Deco period, whose motifs can also be found throughout the spaces.

The imaginary client I kept in mind from was Elsa Schiaparelli, the fashion designer whose garments themselves, it could be argued, were Surrealist works. I drew just as much inspiration from her couture dressmaker details as from the offbeat, humorous touches she regularly added with élan. The black moiré silk lining the bedroom walls was a frequently used fabric in Schiaparell’s work, and her signature color “Shocking Pink” makes numerous appearances throughout my design. In fact, this fictional collaboration revealed itself to be kismet. In my research, I discovered that Schiaparelli designed a perfume in 1940 called “Sleeping” which was meant to be spritzed moments before drifting into slumber. The scent was intended to illuminate the subconscious and “light the way to ecstasy."

Two other Surrealists whose works influenced my design are Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dalí, both of whom Schiaparelli collaborated with during her career. My (mostly) monochromatic color scheme came to me after watching Cocteau’s 1946 film La Belle et la Bête, in which the Beast’s 17th century château looked so gorgeous in black and white, lit only by magical anthropomorphized candelabras. In my early 20s, I made a solo pilgrimage to the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Spain. It was a true Surrealist Gesamtkunstwerk - being there felt like walking through Dalí’s dreams. As endlessly inspiring as I found that place to be, my intention here was not to literally superimpose my specific dream imagery but rather to create optimal conditions for anyone to drift off into whatever new reality their subconscious may reveal.

A home should never be decorated. It should be composed.
After 25 years of designing homes in New York and around the world, I’ve learned that the real value of a designer isn’t found in the pieces we choose. It’s in the thousands of decisions you’ll never have to think about.

It’s the lamp placed exactly where you reach for a book at night. It’s the sofa depth that makes a Sunday afternoon feel endless. It’s the hallway that catches morning light because we moved one wall eight inches.

A seasoned designer brings: -Value. The majority of the homes we’ve designed sell for above asking price and, far beyond market value. -Vision. We see the finished room before the first sample arrives, so every choice builds toward something whole.
-Access. We have trade relationships, artisans, and one-of-a-kind finds that never reach a showroom floor.
-Protection. We catch the costly mistakes before they happen: the wrong scale, the wrong finish, the order that arrives in twelve weeks instead of four.
-Longevity. We create rooms that age with grace and hold their value, rather than chasing a trend that fades in a season.

The best compliment I ever received wasn’t about a fabric or a finish. A client told me, “I don’t know what you did, but I’m happier coming home.”

That’s the work.

All in the Details: In the library, we layered in floral linen and throw pillows by @clarencehousetextiles to soften the cerused oak paneling. Ottomans nestled by the fire offer a cozy perch at cocktail parties without blocking the view of the flames. The hand-blocked Dahlia on linen is eternally chic, and antique botanical prints tucked into the bookshelves add a lush liveliness, an ode to elegance.

FF - Friday Feature…
Our 2019 @brooklynshowhouse Dining Room as featured in @nycandg that same year… The Showhouse was a truly wonderful experience. We partnered with @incollect and then assembled members from what we call our ‘circle of friends’ - and everybody went to work and the result looked like it was never any different…. We fantasized about the sea captain who supposedly lived at the house at one point… and then his family adding items to the room over time…. Sentiment, soul, emotion - the very ingredients we use in our daily operations at the studio when left to our own devices. @ptouch1 dug out an archival museum pattern from the @tilletttextiles body of work, it was printed on fabric in custom colors and paperbacked - to wonderful and magic effect…. @mark_gagnon made papier-mâché curtains based on antique carved wooden hearse ones we had seen at auction. @artgroovestudio painted a circular sisal rug with sardines after our design. We filled the original built-ins with @christopherspitzmillerinc blue and white marbled ceramic marvels and asked for an artichoke tureen which was fresh put of the kiln when Chris personally delivered it together with some luster column candlestick holders…@hearthcabinet made it possible to actually have a fire in the defunct fireplace… we filled the room with antiques and modern furniture and @gustthepoodle swiftly painted four clip on shades for the crystal lamps… the room is long gone, the house changed hands but we know the sea captain’s soul is still there… so are our memories and the wonderful photos by @mentistudio …

TTT - Tricks of the Trade Tuesday….
When we didn’t like the existing recessed down lights in our @brooklynshowhouse bathroom (the inaugural one in 2017) we got converter kits with canopies and ordered custom wicker lampshades to temporarily ‘replace’ them… this way, after the showhouse, it was easy to bring the ceiling ‘back to normal’…

Here’s a teaser video to point out something very special about us. Working with Charles and his exquisite sense of taste brings glamour to a home. This Park Avenue library was designed to be both comfortable and stunning with its carefully curated and crafted interior. Suede upholstery wraps the walls and TV frame to bring silence while repurposed Art Deco metal embellishments elevate the style of the room and bring permanence. It really helps to have a client who believes wholeheartedly in the process while contributing their own personality and taste to give an identity to a space. An Architect like Stephen Wang makes for a seamless collaboration! This is how we like to work and when you have the right team, perfection is possible!

What do you think? ~Randall

Serene in summer green… 🌿🌞🌿🌞🌿

From a spark, to a concept, to a plan, to a sketch, … to reality! The creative process in design can vary, but with the same intended result - comfortable, unique, and beautiful rooms to really live in.
This room’s first “spark” was the fabulous antique Victorian bamboo armoire, from @newel_1939, and the perfect green Swedish flatweave rug from @Nazmiyal. From those beginnings, a concept was created and the journey begun. An antique bamboo dresser converted into a sink, bamboo slats installed in the cove ceiling, a bamboo bed and dresser from @bunnywilliamshome, and fern embroidered fabric from @sanderson1860 complete a fully realized concept to process to reality! A timeless summer room, reflecting the natural world around it… sweet dreams!! 🌿🌿🌿

TTT - Tricks of the Trade Tuesday….
Getting involved in your neighborhood Showhouse is so important and we were lucky 🍀 to participate in the @brooklynshowhouse twice while we lived there - and, in fact - are still quietly involved… Here, we designed the Main 🛁 Bathroom in the inaugural 2017 sShowhouse …
