06.04.2020 | San Diego Black Lives Matter Movement

They called both protests peaceful.
Only one ended in mass arrests.

In 2020, while a pandemic brought the world to a halt, one thing remained constant: police brutality.
On June 4th, hundreds gathered at Balboa Park, many already marching through downtown San Diego before arriving. Organizers made it clear—this would be a peaceful protest. Arms linked, the crowd moved together with intention.

As the march pushed toward Hillcrest, protesters were met by a police line blocking their path.
They adjusted.

The route shifted through North Park, crossing the Georgia Street Bridge—where the scale of the movement came into full view. From above, the crowd stretched across blocks, a collective demand for accountability that couldn’t be ignored.

A small counter-protest group attempted to disrupt the march with racist chants—an ugly contrast to a movement centered on dignity and justice.

Still, the march continued.
Protesters reached the North Park sign before turning south toward the downtown police station, where they were once again met by officers in riot gear. A sit-in followed just blocks away as authorities declared an unlawful assembly and ordered dispersal.

Organizers warned the crowd: staying could mean arrest.

Many stayed anyway.
Only one person was detained that night.

Just days earlier, on May 31st—another protest described as peaceful—over 100 people were detained and booked into county jail under a similar unlawful assembly declaration.

Same city. Same movement. Same calls for justice.
Different response.

I’m a first-gen Guatemalteco, born and raised in San Diego. In 2018, I shared my family’s encounter with ICE-a story that didn't begin on 9/11/2007, but its course pivoted for my family and myself.

Both of my parents were born in the early-to-mid 60s in Guatemala, Central America. They met in 1986 at my Tío Rony’s karate gym (Maya Mastership). My mother, one of the few women instructors in a male-dominated space, and my dad, a student at the gym dreamed up of a future together-but their country was crumbling.

The 1954 U.S.-backed coup (fueled by United Fruit Co's private army & the C.I.A.) ignited Guatemala’s 36-year civil war. Over 80% of the rural Maya population was massacred. My parents, university students at the time, lost friends to torture, disappearances, and executions. Fearing they'd meet the same fate, they fled to the U.S. for asylum.

They left everything behind, survived the journey through Mexico, and built a life in San Diego, offering help at many religious communities. After 20 years and 3 kids later, my mother got her green card-but my father’s approval was still pending when ICE detained them on 9/11/2007.

As a 10 year old child, seeing those ICE agents in my home, It had been made apparent that the U.S. government was something that I could not believe or trust in. I learned first-hand that the so-called 'Land of the Free' and the 'American Dream' were not made for families such as mine.

This conversation isn’t just about policies-it’s about generational trauma. The mental health toll on children of separated families. It’s about how U.S. intervention (like the 1954 coup) destabilized countries like Guatemala, forcing families like mine to flee. Our trauma is not an accident-it’s policy. The U.S. sowed chaos abroad, then criminalized the survivors. But our resilience? That’s our protest.

As always, thank you to @borderangelsofficial
& @el_alan_lili ,the host of @portofentrypod
For having me share my story with the public. As well as @gumusserpi for capturing BTS for this project & to everyone who helped me grow!
