Graduating from Pratt Institute with a B.A. in Critical & Visual Studies, Lyall's creative journey began with a background in fashion design, influencing her distinctive approach to the human figure and incorporating fashion illustration techniques into her art. Lyall's studio, filled with donated materials, reflects her tactile and diverse creative process, utilizing found objects and unconventional materials like a canceled debit card in her artworks. She addresses racial identity, beauty standards, and social dynamics, bringing attention to the hypervisibility created by social media and celebrity culture. Lyall's accolades include a public mural created for the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, NY, in 2020, and solo exhibitions at Byas & Leon in Brooklyn, NY, in 2019, and Era Gallery in Milan, Italy, in 2022. “30 Years of NIA” 🐛 𝓓𝓻𝓪𝔀𝓲𝓷𝓰 by Haylie Jimenez ( @_h4yli3 ), now exhibited in the anniversary group show at New Image Art. 🌷 ⭐ 30 Years of NIA ⭐ Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Haylie Jimenez ✶ "Lay With Me", 2024 Ink on Toned Paper 20 x 26 inches / 50.8 x 66 cm (Framed) ✶ An artist which New Image Art was responsible for curating and organizing their first exhibition OR debut in LA Haylie Jimenez (b. Orlando, FL) spent most of her adolescence in rural north Georgia along with her twin, Sydnie. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a BFA in May 2020. Jimenez' work depicts/centers around black and brown queer femmes, either in normal everyday settings based from her own lived experiences, sometimes including mythical or magical elements to emphasize certain marginalized realities. Her practice consists of drawings, printmaking, and animation. She is interested in drawing as a form of documentation and in the various ways drawing styles are informed and how lived experiences inform style as well as subject matter. Sydnie Jimenez and Haylie Jimenez - often collaborating on artworks - are a force of change. Their art represents the youth and statehood of 2022. They both excavate their reality and produce works of kinship and the self. The common catalyst of their creations is the revolutionary and anarchic attitude embedded in each sculpture and drawing they conceive. Undergoing any measure of comfort and social ease, the Jimenez twins operate through visual poetics of deconstruction and chaos, materializing in the vestments a certain zeitgeist that waved to the loss of stabilizing social and cultural coordinates of the post-pandemic world. #contemporaryart #arthistory #losangelesexhibition #hayliejimenez #newimageartgallery

"30 Years of NIA" 💐 𝓟𝓪𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰 by Monica Kim Garza ( @monicakimgarza ), now exhibited in the anniversary group show at New Image Art. 🥂 ⭐ 30 Years of NIA ⭐ Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Monica Kim Garza ✶ Bringing Flowers and Wine, 2023 Oil on Canvas 30 x 40 inches / 76.2 x 101.6 cm ✶ An artist which New Image Art was responsible for curating and organizing their first exhibition OR debut in LA Monica Kim Garza portrays audacious women, living life to the fullest. They lounge, eat, drink, smoke, sunbathe, have sex and play sports, enjoying mundane activities as they calmly and unabashedly gaze at us. Everyday moments, memories, and "vibes" as Kim Garza puts it, come together in joyful, Epicurean scenes, where the pressures of modern life seem to evaporate. Painted with fast-paced, gestural brushstrokes, the female figures and their surrounding environments blend together, heedless of antiquated compositional edicts. Monica Kim Garza’s vibrant paintings of women of colour reject the dominant white male gaze. Altogether, they reflect an unfettered utopia of female leisure and joy. Graza’s work has been exhibited in several solo exhibitions, including Sliver of Salt, Soco Gallery, Charlotte, US (2022); Baguettes, The Hole, New York (2021); Summer I miss you, Ruttkowski;68, Cologne (2021); Closer, V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2020); Cucul, with Vincent Beaurin, Galerie Julien Cadet, Paris (2020); and Orange and Cinnamon, New Image Art Gallery, Los Angeles (2020). Among her group exhibitions Mixed Pickles, Ruttkowski;68, Cologne (2021); Paper Cut Bodega III, V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2021); Lampadaphoria, V1 Gallery, Copenhagen (2021); Hybrids, CFHILL, Stockholm (2020); Personal Mythologies, Galerie Julien Cadet, Paris (2020); The Beyond: Georgia O’Kieffe and Beyond, New Britain Museum of American Art, Connecticut (2019); and PUNCH LA, Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, Los Angeles (2019). "30 Years of NIA" 🪶 𝓟𝓪𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓲𝓷𝓰 by Umar Rashid AKA Frohawk Two Feathers ( @frohawktwofeathers ), now exhibited in the anniversary group show at New Image Art. 🖤 ⭐ 30 Years of NIA ⭐ Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Umar Rashid ✶ Desert People. Desert Power, 2018 Acrylic & Ink On Canvas 36 x 36 x 2 inches / 91.44 x 91.44 x 5.08 cm. ✶ An artist which New Image Art was responsible for curating and organizing their first exhibition OR debut in LA Umar Rashid (also known as Frohawk Two Feathers) is a natural storyteller. He employs writing, illustration, painting, and sculpture to construct fabulations or, put simply, alternative historical narratives that reference a panoply of cultures, collapsing geography and time. At the core of his practice is a reimagining of romantic history painting and eighteenth-century colonial scenes. Rashid steers clear of simplistic dichotomies, challenging the viewer with a complex iconographic language of arcane classifying systems, maps, and cosmological diagrams. His work is informed by recognizable cultural references, whether historical materials such as Egyptian hieroglyphs, ledger art, Persian miniature painting, and illustrated Spanish colonial manuscripts or more contemporary phenomena such as the hip-hop era of the 1980s and 1990s. Alongside these identifiable sources—often regarded as “truth”—are unseen, fantastical stories, with Rashid taking on the role of what one might call a fabulist. His painterly tales complicate the idea of what is true and false, prompting us to consider whether the “truths” that we are taught may in fact be lies. #contemporaryart #arthistory #losangelesexhibition #umarrashid #frohawktwofeathers #newimageart

“30 YEARS OF NIA” - 𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰 Sydnie Jimenez ( @syddd.viciouss ) 🎀 Group Anniversary Exhibition Opening Feb 22 from 6-9 PM at New Image Art Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Sydnie Jimenez (b. 1997, Orlando, Florida) channels the experiences of brown youth into powerful ceramic sculptures. Her work transcends mere representation, delving into the intricate complexities of individuality within communities existing on the fringes of a popular culture rooted in white supremacy. Her journey as an artist is deeply intertwined with the navigation through the toxic Eurocentric foundation that shapes the perceptions of black and brown individuals in today’s society. Having spent much of her childhood in North Georgia, Jimenez often works in collaboration with her twin sister, Haylie Jimenez, both drawing profound inspiration from their upbringing. Jimenez’s figurative work serves as a powerful commentary on style, self-expression, and internal reflection within the context of a post-colonial world. Born of a white mother and a Dominican father, Jimenez’s art reflects the nuanced experience of growing up mixed race in a European-centered white culture. Her sculptures engage in conversations surrounding the tough demeanors adopted by black and brown femmes as a defense mechanism against an unwelcoming society. Jimenez is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (BFA 2020), and her focus on ceramic sculpture has earned her prestigious awards such as the Windgate Fellowship (2020) and the SPARK Grant. “30 YEARS OF NIA” - 𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰 Anatole Heger ( @annnnnatole ) 🕊️ Group Anniversary Exhibition Opening Feb 22 from 6-9 PM at New Image Art Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Anatole Heger, a Belgian-born self-taught painter, embarked on a unique global journey from a young age, traveling through Africa, Asia, and Latin America with his family. Settling in Sucre, Bolivia, and later Mallorca, Spain, Anatole discovered his passion for painting in an abandoned discotheque. His artistic exploration led him to the Courtauld Museum in London, where he initially pursued art history but eventually prioritized painting. In 2022, he moved to Los Angeles, marking a transformative chapter. Anatole’s artistic language continually evolves, drawing inspiration from his unconsciousness, conscience, senses, and feelings. His paintings explore the uncanny, featuring stylized figures in otherworldly environments, using a muted palette to create a mystical world that celebrates the beauty of the unknown. The June-July 2023 exhibition “Anatole’s Diary” at West Hollywood’s New Image Gallery marked his first solo show in the United States, offering a visceral memoir of his time in California and global journey. Each painting captures Anatole’s vivacious life, reflecting on constant movement, travel, and connection with cultures worldwide, presenting an unforgettable and entrancing artistic vision. “30 YEARS OF NIA” - 𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰 Karla Ekaterine Canseco ( @karlotta.ekat ) 🐶 Group Anniversary Exhibition Opening Feb 22 from 6-9 PM at New Image Art Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Karla Ekatherine Canseco (b. 1995, San Fernando Valley, CA) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles and Mexico City. Her practice explores care, love, and violence through different mediums, particularly clay and performance. She is drawn to how matter carries information that has been passed down and is present; Our bodies collapse conceptions of time and hold stories in the same manner clay transcribes in its composition and impression, like a cannibalization of touch. In making she invites her history within, daydreams, and poetics to materialize into sculptures forming her personal and shared mythologies. She is interested in how her inherited mythologies are dislocated from time allowing them to continuously unfold. She is currently conjuring a militia of canines, guards and guides of love. She has exhibited at Palm Springs Museum, MOCA Tuscon, SF MOMA, and General Express in CDMX. She will soon be featured in a group exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch. “30 YEARS OF NIA” - 𝓕𝓮𝓪𝓽𝓾𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰 Umar Rashid ( @frohawktwofeathers ) 🪶 Group Anniversary Exhibition Opening Feb 22 from 6-9 PM at New Image Art Feb 22 - March 30, 2024 Umar Rashid (b. 1976, Chicago, IL) lives/works in Los Angeles; makes paintings, drawings, and sculptures that chronicle the grand historical fiction of the Frenglish Empire (1648–1880) that he has been developing for over seventeen years. Each work represents a frozen moment from this parallel world that often recalls our own fraught histories—both canonized and marginalized—with familiar signifiers and iconographies that channel the visual lexicons of hip hop, ancient and modern pop culture, gang and prison life, and revolutionary movements throughout time. This alternative history and its many subplots are told with elaborate visual and literary detail—with painterly tableaus depicting large networks of protagonists that relate to one another across bodies of work, and with lyrical and humorous artwork titles often a paragraph in length. Each exhibition is produced in response to the geographical locale of the host site; each time, Rashid builds upon his encyclopedic knowledge of global colonial history and conjures new fabulations that underline the roles of race, gender, class, and power in the tales of what was, what was recorded, what was negated, and what could have been. Rashid received his BA in cinema and photography from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL. His work was featured at The Huntington and the Hammer Museum as part of the biennial Made in LA 2020: a version. Recent institutional solo exhibitions include Ancien Regime Change 4, 5, and 6, MoMA PS1, Queens, NY (2022). Rashid’s work is represented in the public collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, CA; and the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town, South Africa, among others.
