——— BEHIND THE WORK ———

One of my favourite places to be is behind the camera. For HŌLUS-BŌLUS, I worked with photographer Nick Caldwell to capture the interiors and designers/artists behind the apartments works, I just didn’t want it to be a standard portrait, but a little bit more of them within the frames.

Creatives can be surprisingly nervous in front of a camera. I love shaking that out of them. Making them move, laugh, loosen up, grab something, sit somewhere they probably shouldn’t and whatever it takes to get past the “portrait face”.

The aim was to make each image somehow connect back to their practice, personality or the world they create. Because the people behind the work are often just as interesting as the work itself.

new works

This new collection of ‘architectural oddities’ was first conceived and presented at @soft.exhibition for #melbournedesignweek 2024, in the softest of homes.

While simple in their form, the geometry creates a number of technical challenges. Sand cast as a singular object (no post-production welding or machining), these vessels bridge object and architecture, exploring ideas of mass, shadow, light, raw honest materiality and modularity, common themes throughout my work.

Fittingly, 2 years on, the expanded collection once again makes its debut in a fabulous curated apartment, presented by Emma Elizabeth and Cassandra Bird as part of Sydney Contemporary’s off-site program, hosted by @the_____second.

Works are available through the exhibition curators.

Curtain and Brick Walls

Off-Menu had 3 main sections, grouping work of each participant with similar objects, practices and/or finishes.

The curtain and brick walls focused on household items, objects, jewellery, ceramics & graphic design. A wide array practices were shown here, each of which created pieces that easily of fill your home, tell you a story, and invite you to linger and observe.

Gusswerk (01) Cast Aluminium
Gusswerk, a series of small vessels, continuing my exploration of architectural forms through cast aluminium, with a focus on weight, surface and rawness being expressed in the final object.
The work keeps the marks of making visible, allowing the material to express its innate texture, patina, and small imperfections.

Gusswerk (02) Plywood
The plywood iteration explores the same form through a lighter, layered material, a shift from casting to cutting, scoring and assembly. While still raw in its finish the work looks more at grain, edge and layering.

Very excited to be presenting new work at Synthesis, presented by @_studio.shields at @abbotsfordconvent for #melbournedesignweek.

This is the largest piece I have produced to date, continuing my exploration of modularity, repetition and the raw texture of cast aluminium.
