Our most logistically complicated shoot yet.

11 personnel, 35km of underground terrain, five days, all on an active site. Over eight months of pre-production, we meticulously mapped out how we would move through New Afton safely, documenting a never-before-seen world for a project truly the first of its kind.

Our assignment was to make a blockbuster-size tour video of the harshest working conditions on the planet: 2 hours down into the crust of the earth, where temperatures are over 40 degrees centigrade. We built our systems from the ground up. Custom Black Arm rig, dual RED Raptors for simultaneous coverage of vehicles, Inspire 3 and FPV drones flying underground, custom blast-proof camera housing, custom PPE-compatible radio communication, a mobile, protected, redundant video village for client monitoring…

The list goes on.

Our incredible crew, and the fantastic operations team at New Afton, pulled off the seemingly impossible. Our full 10-minute tour video will be available onsite at New Afton.

Spent the last week doing some pretty deep hard drive diving and wow, what a way to reminisce on the work while looking for where patterns slowly take shape.

One of my favourite stumble-upon’s was taking another look at these albums… a series of lifestyle shoots to build marketing for pre-sale homes with developers around Vancouver and the lower mainland.

It was right around this time 5 years ago when my focus started drifting away from core bike photography, when @newparallel brought me on for these assignments with @core.creative.strategy and @rennie.group - eternally grateful that!

I realize in hindsight that these were some of my first opportunities to shoot interior lifestyle scenes and really look at design. Now these topics are where a lot of my energy is focused and it’s kind of brilliant to see where it started.

These photos are all 3-5 years old. Though, I just started working on a new personal series as a chance to go deeper into place and design. Stoked to start sharing more soon 🥰

New Afton | The World Below (DC)

One of the most challenging shoots we’ve done as a crew. We had a very specific shot-list and story to tell for the client but as always we wanted to bring our own fingerprint to the project as well.

Most days we were shooting in an environment that is so loud you can’t communicate and so toxic you must wear your face mask at all times. Balancing that with trying not to get crushed but heavy machinery working in the dark was definitely a rush.
