Wonky, jagged and groovy: we spoke with Harsya Wahono about creating the music and sound design for Natasha Tontey’s ‘The Phantom Combatants’.

Wahono shares how he approached Tontey’s distinct sonic world—and how North Sulawesi’s fascination with American cowboy culture collided with Italian library music in the process.

Visit Natasha Tontey’s ’The Phantom Combatants’, at Ateneo Veneto, Venice, until 25 October.

MACHO MYSTIC MELTDOWN
Pemutaran Khusus & Diskusi: Sejarah Menjadi Daging
10 Oktober 2026, pukul 14.00 WITA
Wale Papendangan, Sonder

Kami mengundang teman-teman untuk hadir dalam pemutaran khusus Macho Mystic Meltdown, seri moving image berkelanjutan karya Natasha Tontey yang bergerak melalui sejarah Minahasa, maskulinitas, migrasi, ingatan, ritual, camp, dan fiksi spekulatif.

Program Pemutaran:
Macho Mystic Meltdown Chapter 1: Oikouménē
Macho Mystic Meltdown Chapter 2: Monster; She Wrote
Macho Mystic Meltdown Chapter 4: In a Muscle Mood
Dalam In a Muscle Mood, tubuh menjadi ruang tempat sejarah Minahasa diwarisi, dipertunjukkan, dipertanyakan, dan dibayangkan kembali.

Pemandu: Kalfein Wuisan
Narasumber: Greenhill Weol
Penanggap: Eliana Hadid
Seniman: Natasha Tontey

“Sejarah tidak menjadi monumen maupun arsip, melainkan daging yang hidup.” Greenhill Weol

Gobsmacked and delighted 🫯🦾
Macho Mystic Meltdown, Chapter 2: Monster; She Wrote (2026) claws into @sgiffest 37th edition of Singapore International Film Festival 2026 for its Southeast Asian premiere, competing in the Southeast Asian Short Film Competition.

Starring the one and only 🖤🦾 @asmaraabigail in a fever dream of bad taste, bodily excess, military drag, monstrous femininity and macho decay.

Singapore, prepare your ears 👂🏾👂🏾👂🏾👂🏾

With care and compassion, I YAYAT U SANTI 🦾🖤🤍

Beauty is dead. Masculinity is leaking. The monster has excellent cheekbones 🦾

Natasha Tontey’s video installation brings a third layer of purgatory to Ateneo Veneto.

This Venice building once belonged to a confraternity that provided spiritual comfort to prisoners condemned to death. Since 1600, its ceiling depict souls in transition.

Today, Tontey’s story of Minahasan resistance adds its own layer – a purgatory of betrayal, war and political struggle.

Visit Natasha Tontey’s ’The Phantom Combatants’, at Ateneo Veneto, Venice, until 25 October. Free entry.

"Garden Amidst the Flame" (2022)

Deskripsi Karya: Garden Amidst the Flame continues Tontey’s ongoing research into the ancient knowledge,
technologies and cosmology of the Minahasa, an Indigenous nation in the North Sulawesi province of Indonesia. In this most recent work, Tontey emphasises core Minahasan cultural beliefs in the all-encompassing equilibrium between the human and non-human. Drawing on her experience of the Karai ceremony, which grants Minahasan warriors an armour of invincibility, the artist seeks to establish a queering approach towards gender, youth and ecology.

Produksi: New Pessimism Studio @newpessimism
Sutradara: Natasha Tontey @krazykosmickid
Film credit/acknowledgement: Garden Amidst the Flame is commissioned by Auto Italia, London in partnership with La Becque, Tour-de-Peilz, Stroom Den Haag, The Hague and Shedhalle, Zurich. with additional support from the Governance of NorthSula wesi, Bank SulutGo, the Department of Tourism and Culture of North Sulawesi, and Wale Papendangan Sonder.
