When a scene has a center, you end up with a lot of the same faces in the same room every weekend. For a time, the secret art space was that center and the number of incredible, inspiring bands (largely composed of 16-19 year old kids) that came out of that few years was truly unrivaled in the 25+ years I’ve been around in the LV diy scene. One of the bands that embodied that spirit the most, at least to me, was the punishing powerviolence band Fake Cult. The SAS is gone and the members of those amazing bands are scattered to the wind - some moved away, some had kids, too many are dead, & a few probably became accountants by now. Part of organizing a fest like this, maybe my favorite part, is starting a bunch of group texts and seeing what happens - reconnecting with people, some who fell out of touch with each other or maybe some who had a falling out - getting those faces in the same place, seeing what sparks up. I’m selfishly excited to see Fake Cult play, but I’m equally excited to know that the kids I used to see every weekend are getting in the same room and playing together again for the first time in a long time. There’s no money in this, there ain’t any significant fame to be had, so what is this all about if not the relationships that we build and the lives that are shaped by all of it?

Just uploaded a lil 30 min mix I did for @obeka_music for my @orokoradio debut🌷🌷🌷

Goes from Burmese halftime to Grenadian soca via a bunch of other riddims including shatta, baile funk and some other fun bits - sounds of my heritage & the musical scene around me x

🌻Slide 1🌻
Kalash & Maureen - Laptop ➡️ YASAR AKPENÇE - Desert Wind

🌸Slide 2🌸
@neybuu - Dhiga ➡️ @cralias - Abdelmajid’s Drums (Original Mix)

🌺Slide 3🌺
@maxwell_simons - Devagar (feat. @djiodosan) (@3phaz_ Remix) ➡️
Transglobal Underground - Ruma Jhuma (D&B Remix by Dub Colossus)

Lots of hybridised beats that are bringing folk traditions & innovation into the club space - drew from the redroom yangon compilation, a tabla-infused juke EP, mutations of baile funk & more

Tracklist on last slide :)✨✨✨✨

U can listen on my soundcloud (🔗 in the usual spot)

There are 149 fierce samples to play with - including drums, pads, drones, loops, noises - offering up countless sonic directions to head off in.

The secret art space was just a little basement underneath a barbershop in southside, but for a few years it became a central hub for a community of artists, musicians, and a bunch of fucked up kids. This month marks ten years since it closed down, so I thought it’d be nice to use some of that timely nostalgia to (a) remind us all that magic is possible if we want to put in the work and (b) raise some money for important local charities. The preorder can be found in the LVAC section of MERCHBIN.NET and 100% of profits will be split between New Bethany and Turning Point of the LV. #sas #secretartspace
