"Contact sport S&C" gets sold as one program that covers boxing, rugby, wrestling, and football all the same way. The demands on the body couldn't be more different.

A boxer needs repeated explosive output with almost no direct collision force. A rugby player needs tissue that can absorb repeated collisions on top of repeated sprints. A wrestler needs grip and ground-based force production neither of the other two ever touch. Train them the same and you're building the wrong fighter, or the wrong forward, or the wrong wrestler.

Sled pushes and drags have become a staple of fitness content, sold as a joint friendly way to build strength and conditioning at the same time. For a fighter, the question is whether it's being used with any purpose, or just because it trends well on camera.

The case for it is real. Low eccentric load means genuinely joint friendly conditioning volume during a heavy sparring block, and it builds leg drive and hip extension that transfers to pivoting and power off the back foot. The case against it is just as real. Sled work trains a straight line, bilateral push pattern, and boxing is almost entirely rotational and single leg dominant. The viral version usually has no periodisation behind it at all.

The verdict: a genuinely useful tool in the off-season or early camp, with an exit date once camp gets specific.

Swipe through for the full breakdown. No ego, just data.

You can feel fit and be under-recovered.
You can feel tired and be ready to train hard.

Your perception of readiness and your actual physiological readiness are not the same thing, and heart rate variability gives you the data to tell the difference.

HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats. Higher variability means the parasympathetic nervous system is dominant, you're recovered, ready to adapt, ready to work. Lower variability means the sympathetic system is dominant, you're still under load, still accumulating stress, and adding a hard session on top will extend that state rather than produce adaptation.

Track it every morning before you move. Watch your 7-day rolling average, not the daily number. A drop of more than 10% below your average is a signal to reduce intensity, not push through.

Works for any contact sport athlete who wants to make training decisions based on data rather than guesswork

The injuries that end boxing careers are mostly preventable. Not all of them, but the majority, and the research on where boxers get injured most points directly to areas that structured S&C addresses specifically.

Hands and wrists account for 30–40% of all boxing injuries. Shoulders, knees, and ankles make up most of the rest. Every single one of those areas is strengthened through targeted S&C work. Wrist flexor and extensor strength reduces metacarpal impact. Rotator cuff endurance and scapular stability protects the shoulder. Single-leg stability and hip control reduces knee and ankle risk.

The minimum prehab standard isn't complicated, wrist curls, reverse curls, band pull-aparts, face pulls, single-leg balance work. Ten minutes appended to existing sessions. Most fighters do none of it.

An injured fighter can't train. A fighter who can't train can't improve. Prevention is performance
