As a continuation of our Imagine Noir program, we are happy to announce our panelist’s for our Imagine Noire celebration taking place on Thursday the 15th of October with @immaireland 🌟🤎

Moderated by @lulitluis, the panel which will explore Black imagination and artistic expression features filmmaker Sekera Mohamed Besta (@ngomahoe), visual artist and photographer Ishmael Claxton (@ishmaelclaxtonphotos), and post colonial literature researcher Sandrine Uwase Ndahiro (@dr_sandrinendahiro)

The evening will be a chance to celebrate and examine Afro Diasporic art and expression, as well as connect with filmmakers, creatives and enjoyers of art

Join Dr. Ebun Joseph for a screening and panel discussion of the documentary Echoes of 2004, examining the long-term impact of Ireland’s 2004 Citizenship Referendum, particularly the risk of statelessness and prolonged legal uncertainty among some Irish-born young people. The documentary showcases the lived experiences of young adults born and raised in Ireland who remain without citizenship or secure legal status, and the psychological and structural consequences that follow.

Since the advent of photography, the camera has always been a tool for communication. Narratives and agendas abound in each image and photographic series. Colonial photographers sought to confirm stereotypes of Africans as tribal while simultaneously building a (photographic) case for the necessity of the imperial mission in Africa. African photographers and their subjects too have imbued their desired meanings into photographs, often self-fashioning themselves in the image of their ideals.

Photography thus has been and continues to be consistently used as a tool to communicate narratives about past, present and futures. Photos are never neutral nor purely documentary. They are usually framed and justified. This raises the importance of provenance of images, tracing origins and intentions. We should not only look at what a photo captures but we should also be critical of what it does.

What is being communicated about the past, present or future in any given photograph and how may it potentially relate to broader societal narratives and agendas?
