One of the most incredible experiences of our time in #darwin #larrakiacountry was attending the #nima #nationalindigenousmusicawards and the performance by @ngulmiya and the #redflagdancers - I waited to post this sequence of images until I received the permission from @ngulmiya which he has given. The whole performance was incredibly special, The entrance of the dancers, which I previously posted, was immediately captivating. The colour, dynamic movement, incredible music and the inclusion of dancers of all ages including this young boy, was impossible to look away from. This was a moment of deep@connection between the dancers and the audience and it was a privilege to be present and to have photographed this moment.

A little NIMAs reflection through the moments captured behind the scenes 🖤📸 @scart.au

Most people see what happens on stage. These photos capture a little of what it takes behind it.

The bump in, rehearsals, changeovers, problem solving, being gig fit, watching the clock, and those moments side stage when everything you’ve been working towards finally comes together.

After five years Stage Managing the NIMAs, it’s still incredibly special to stand side stage on Larrakia Country and watch our artists, culture and stories take over the stage and captivate an audience.

Creating space for more First Nations crew to be part of the teams that make these events happen is exactly why Balya exists.

We don’t just belong on the stage. We belong behind it too.

Proud of our crew. Proud of the work. Proud to keep creating pathways behind the scenes.

A powerful night of culture, dance and music at the Kalkarindji Freedom Day Festival! ❤️🖤💛

TEABBA was there to capture the incredible Red Flag Dancers, Ngulmiya and Bluey bringing their energy and cultural strength to the stage on Gurindji Country.

The Red Flag Dancers, from Numbulwar in Arnhem Land, are one of the Northern Territory’s renowned traditional dance groups, led for decades by respected Songman and cultural leader Ngulmiya Nundhirribala.

Ngulmiya has dedicated his life to sharing music, language and culture, inspiring the next generation while taking Numbulwar’s traditional songs and dances to audiences around Australia and the world.

It was deadly to see the Red Flag Dancers, Ngulmiya and Bluey performing together as part of Freedom Day — bringing powerful stories, culture and performance to the celebrations of the 1966 Wave Hill Walk-Off and the ongoing strength of First Nations communities.
