If I were to describe my state this year in a single word, it would be uncertainty. Not being stuck, but moving while questioning direction. Life did not stop, and neither did I, though the outline ahead remained unclear.

Within this state, repetition took shape. The text I returned to most was Eternal Current Events, a collection of Chris Marker’s early notes and essays compiled by Jackson Smith. There were two or three pages I found myself rereading again and again. Marker writes:

Cats are Gods. The most widespread and accessible form of God. That’s beyond question. But might we not better understand their duty to remain invisible? The unremitting effort they put towards taking an interest in mice, in balls of yarn, in other kitties too, as a way of making us respect their anonymity as gods? This exhibition and its presentations come out looking to us like one gigantic blunder, like the disguised servant who says “Your Royal Highness” out loud to his disguised master.

There is something in this insistence on anonymity—the deliberate attention to the trivial and the everyday—that made me pause and reconsider my own position. Some things may not be meant to be named too quickly.

This was also the year I actually entered film production in the States—features, shorts, and costume work. Across different sets, I often heard: “We are making a movie.” and “It takes a village to make a movie.” Being inside the process, those words became almost literal.

Looking back, uncertainty remains. What I know is that I did not stop. Long days on set left their traces.

D’Angelo left this world this year, and Black Messiah became the album I listened to most. When I missed home—when I thought of Taiwan—I kept returning to Shallow Levée’s Endless Playlist.

These repetitions—listening, watching, thinking—were how uncertainty moved this year. The pace was slow, but it did not stop. I hope next year, I can slowly move out of it.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen...it’s that time of year again!

I think we can all agree that this year in production has been weird, to say the least. It didn’t go how many of us thought it would go. Even editing this video didn’t go how I thought it would go, which I think is a pretty apt metaphor. I ended up picking a completely different song because the Jonas Brothers released an absolute BANGER at the 11th hour (which I just found out was co-written by the ROLLING STONES), but I digress.

Despite a number of setbacks, curveballs, and multiple strikes, this year has truly been amazing. Two feature films shot in DC were released on Netflix and Apple TV, Chef Andre Rush fixed up 11 struggling restaurants around the DMV on Tubi, we explored a room at the Folger Shakespeare Library containing 25 copies of Shakespeare’s First Folio for PBS, and 32 flag football teams from around the country duked it out at RFK Field for the NFL Flag Summer Invitational. Every project I worked on had some element of joy, hope, or exploration, and I’m hoping to carry those same themes into 2024.

I worked with so many talented people this year, but there are a couple in particular that I’d like to highlight (spoiler alert: they’re all women because women in film are awesome).

Newly-minted Union Production Designer @barikares basically carried this year on her damn back, crafting amazing music videos, commercials, and PSA’s (not to mention redesigning those 11 restaurants I mentioned with Chef Rush). @priscillapartido directed a short film inspired by her grandmother that a lot of quality people showed up to work on, and I couldn’t be prouder of all her hard work and determination. @ktcvll let me crash on her couch, eat Dominos, and watch “Antiques Roadshow” with her on multiple occasions, and those are memories that I’ll always cherish. Finally, I’d like to shout out @lyndajulie and @thisistriciaa, who were my rocks this year and provided me with work, advice, and friendship that got me through some very hard times.

Thank you all a thousand times over, let’s do it again next year ❤️.

Perhaps you had trouble sleeping in surrealist Sweden? Or struggle to stay alive knowing the past? Maybe you substituted at the wrong public school? 🏫

The corporate American 80s and Talking Heads are waiting. And so is the Season 4 finale! Where have you been, what are you waiting for? 🎸

There’s still time to celebrate Halloween 🎃 with a Get Out episode! Don’t keep us (or the guests!) waiting, we’re cookieing the pockets we’ll into the ice of winter! Talk soon? 🥶🍪🎙️

Happy #ghosted day! Such a fun project to work on with my amazing friends! So proud that @dexfletch & co. chose to come and shoot in DC, thank you for showing the world that there’s more than just politics here (there are also spies, farmers, and awesome filmmakers ❤️).
