Know the signs.

Don’t make the same mistake I did.

If something doesn’t feel right, get it checked

These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have lung cancer, but they should be assessed, especially if they persist or worsen.

One of the challenges with lung cancer is that the symptoms can be subtle and are often mistaken for less serious conditions. It’s also important to remember that many of these symptoms are much more commonly caused by conditions other than lung cancer.
Common lung cancer symptoms
* A cough that doesn’t go away (lasting more than 3 weeks)
* A change in a long-standing cough
* Coughing up blood (even a small amount)
* Chest pain that is persistent or worsens with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing
* Shortness of breath
* Wheezing
* Repeated chest infections, such as pneumonia or bronchitis
* A hoarse voice
* Unexplained weight loss
* Loss of appetite
* Persistent fatigue or extreme tiredness
* Shoulder pain
* Back pain (particularly if it isn’t related to movement or injury)
* Finger clubbing (enlarged fingertips with curved nails)
* Difficulty swallowing
* Swelling of the face or neck (caused by pressure on a major vein)

Please share to raise awareness.

Clinical years in medical school are scary, new and sometimes overwhelming. But from one former student to you- you will be okay!

I learnt so much from my clinical years and I thought it would be fun to share a few of those lessons. Remember you will have good and bad days and exams but the most important part is learning, reflecting and understanding yourself.

I wish you all the best in your clinical years! ❤️🩺

The proposal to cut Scotland’s NHS health boards from 14 to just 2 will force a major overhaul of NHS IT systems. This directly affects how our medical information is stored, shared and accessed. Each board currently uses different digital platforms for referrals, maternity notes, gynaecology records, fertility pathways and early pregnancy care and other departments. Merging boards means merging these systems, creating risks for patient safety and continuity of care.

How medical information will be affected

❌ System incompatibility Boards use different electronic patient record systems. These do not automatically communicate, meaning data may be lost, duplicated or delayed.

❌ Disruption to women’s health records Gynaecology, fertility and maternity information is often stored across multiple systems. During restructuring, histories and investigations can become fragmented or harder to access.

❌ Reduced GP communication Unite warns restructuring will worsen workload pressures and fragment services. This makes GP to hospital communication even more unreliable, directly affecting transitioning care.

❌ High risk data migration Moving millions of records carries risks of corrupted files, mismatched patient details and broken audit trails. This is dangerous for maternity and fertility pathways where timing is critical.

❌ Weakened auditing Errors increase during IT upheaval. Strong reactive auditing is essential to prevent harm and ensure delays are identified quickly.

❌ Loss of local digital expertise Regional IT teams understand local systems. Centralising boards removes this support, slowing problem solving and increasing downtime.

The Unite announcement shows restructuring will not improve communication or safety. Instead, it increases risks to medical information, continuity of care and access to women’s health services

Racism in the NHS is not simply a problem of the past .

Over the last three years, I’ve dedicated much of my work to exploring racism, representation and health inequalities: from creating Skin Deep: The Doctor for the BMA, to speaking at TEDxNHS, advocating for representation in medical education, speaking for Exeter Living in 2025, and contributing to the work of the NHS Race & Health Observatory.

Along the way, I’ve heard and witnessed how racism can show up across healthcare, in education, recruitment, clinical environments, patient experiences and the everyday interactions that shape whether people feel they belong.

But this work cannot stop at conversations, campaigns or social media posts. The real goal is impact and sustainability.

Grassroots initiatives, student voices and early-career perspectives have a unique role to play. We are often close enough to see where systems are failing, but also positioned to challenge what has become normalised and imagine what could be different.

Representation matters. Speaking up matters. Listening to lived experience matters.

Anti-racism cannot be an occasional campaign or a statement released after a scandal. It has to be embedded into how we teach, train, recruit, lead and deliver healthcare.

Instead of asking: What can I do about racism in the NHS?

We need to ask: What am I going to change because I’ve seen it? and who am I bringing with me?

The work continues. And it needs all of us.

The NHS has developed a healthy choice quiz
which is a free and designed to help people look at their lifestyle and identify areas where they could make healthier changes.
It looks at 6 areas:
🥗 Eating
🏃 Movement/physical activity
🍷 Alcohol
🚭 Smoking and vaping
🧠 Mental wellbeing
😴 Sleep
How does it work?
.
The quiz then gives an overall score out of 10. It also assesses the different lifestyle areas and gives feedback .
It is a lifestyle assessment designed to encourage people to think about their habits and point them towards NHS advice, apps and resources.
.
At South Asian Women’s Health, we completed the NHS Healthy Choices Quiz together. The women shared their results and discussed simple ways they could improve their health and lifestyle.
.
It was a great interactive activity for group discussion, helping everyone reflect on their own habits and learn from each other. I would highly recommend this activity to other community groups as an easy and engaging way to start conversations about healthy lifestyle choices.

One of my good friends finds my hand gesticulations distracting.

Other feedback from my work-related audiences is that it is engaging.

Gesticulating certainly helps me organize my thoughts.

It helps audiences process when I use it to emphasize certain points.

I feel it makes me look open, warm, and honest rather than threatening.

It was great to be back gesticulating at the NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme sharing my experience of using a postal home testing kit.

What was even more rewarding was seeing a number of patient and staff storytellers I had coached share their impactful stories.

I am passionate about amplifying hidden voices through well-crafted stories.

I am also committed to creating spaces where these stories can be shared and listened to with the respect that they deserve.

Do your employees and leadership team need a Lalith?

Slide 1:
I have to hold back the sarcasm, but what I want to say is “oh yeaaaah, god, in the 25 years iv been in debilitating pain I never thought of that, wow! Paracetamol! Thank you so much, I’m CURED! So sorry to waste your valuable time…you really are so so clever…I never would have come up with that on my own”
I’m on the edge of sanity with it, seriously. It has happened to me three times in the last week alone

Slide 2:
When you patiently write to people over and over again, explaining why their post is damaging and desperately trying to leave facts in the comments in the hope that 5% might read your comment. Reels that are reaching millions, leaving me devistated when content creators refuse to remove them or take seriously the responsibility of having a platform. I get so angry when people would rather get likes than actually spread proper awareness.

Slide 3:
As for the doctors who spread misinformation. I have bottomed out on my own trust in doctors, but what makes me RAGE is the less informed patients who are desperate for answers and guidence, who can’t spot the lies and will blindly follow incorrect advice- Sometimes costing the patient their organs, and always costing the patient their informed choice. It makes me so angry, because the title ‘doctor’ comes with prestige and respect, most would take their word. It is a power that is abused when a doctor is practicing out of date medicine and isn’t himself well informed.

Most of the time I feel so small fighting this BS, Why should I have to fight for pain relief?
Why do I have educate people who thrash misinformation about carelessly?
Why do I have to be better informed than my General Doctor or gynaecologist?
I am just a patient, trying to get help myself.

For years, breathing through my nose has been a daily struggle👃🏽

The problem wasn’t nasal polyps, as many people assume.
My nasal turbinates weren’t functioning properly.
Normally, they naturally swell and shrink in response to things like temperature and humidity, helping regulate the airflow through the nose.

Mine stopped adjusting properly, which meant that at certain times my nose would become so blocked that I felt like I simply couldn’t breathe.

That’s how I became completely dependent on nasal decongestant drops.
They gave me temporary relief, but over the years it became a cycle I couldn’t get out of.

Today, after waiting for this for so long, I finally had the procedure to address the problem.

Something as simple as breathing normally is easy to take for granted until you can’t do it.

Now it’s time to recover and hopefully start a new chapter of breathing freely🤍
