OUTPUT X J MUSIC 2026

This year, Output Belfast and J Music have teamed up to present a series of live sessions, curated by our in-house teams, that showcase the best and brightest of our live music scene. Filmed inside the legendary Belfast venue, The Black Box, this series of intimate live sessions were recorded ahead of the evening showcase, wherein Output Belfast x J music showcased 30+ independent artists across 8 venues throughout the city.

Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them', the debut LP from Irish singer-songwriter Niall McDowell, is a capsule of stories; inspired by the eclecticism of Arthur Russell and the performance art of Laurie Anderson, they sought to find a realm for their already off-kilter country music to exist within, using analogue technology and working with producer Chris W. Ryan (Robocobra Quartet, Chalk) to weave in moments of magical realism, strengthening the song-writing and providing a fitting backdrop beyond the veil to explore the album’s themes.

The result is a thoughtful meditation on the chaos of grief, the tribulations of the queer experience, and the singer’s complicated relationship between the two; a diaristic exploration of the personal, the political and the unknown.

'Put Your Hands Where I Can See Them', the first record from Niall McDowell, is out now via TULLE.

✨Producer Spotlight✨

At our camps we have been ridiculously lucky to have met so many brilliant producers. Over the course of the next three camps we want to highlight different producers from across Ireland & beyond. Today is @mattduke0 who joined us back in 2022 (how has it been four years?!)

Matt is not only an exceptional producer whose credits include NI Music Prize single & album of the year, as well as features across BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Ulster, E4, Channel Four & more - he is also a deeply kind and caring person who takes care to ensure all voices are heard in the studio. Go follow Matt and check out his website for details on his past clients & how to work with him ❤️

Matt has shared some lovely thoughts on his time at the camp:

“Soft Gut was such a magic wee weekend and one of the best songwriting camps I’ve been involved in as a producer.

Nikki & Ciaran have created something super special. It’s incredibly well organised, but still feels completely relaxed, creative and like one big family.

One of the highlights was getting to work with loads of artists I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise. Those sessions turned into genuine connections, future collaborations and opportunities that continued way beyond the camp itself.

Getting to work alongside other producers was really valuable as well, producer to producer collaboration isn’t something you get enough of, and was great being able to throw ideas around and get to know other producers.

Also there are donkeys 🫏, enough said.”

If you are interested in joining us at our next camp at @analoguecatalogue from 19th-21st September as a producer or songwriter applications will remain open for a few more days - you can find the link in our bio!

You’ve not missed it. EastSide is only warming up!

We caught up with festival manager Neal Campbell last month at the programme launch to hear what’s in store for the 15th @eastsideartsbel, now running across east Belfast until Sunday 2nd August.

Seven more days and nights of it. Over 100 events, all of them Uniquely East.

Still to come: the Anthony Toner Trio play Templemore Baths on 28th July, EastSide Choir team up with writer Jan Carson for A Love Song to Lough Neagh on 29th July, Belfast TradFest bring With Pipe & Drum to the Great Hall at Stormont on 30th July, and Tia Bow performs Blackberry Path at the Sanctuary Theatre the same night. Saturday 1st August brings Gareth Dunlop to Titanic Distillers for a night of songs and the stories behind them, ParkFest to Orangefield Park with Belfast Circus, and the Nightingale Singing Session to Boundary Taproom for I’ll Tell Me Ma. It all closes on 2nd August with Gig in a Garden from Áine Gordon and Niall McDowell, and Thin Lizzy founder Eric Bell back in his native east Belfast at the Skainos Centre.

A secret garden. Two brilliant artists. A Sunday afternoon well spent 🌿

EastSide Arts and @the.greeneast present Gig in a Garden. An intimate folk showcase with two of Belfast’s rising stars, @niallmcdowelll and @ainegordon_.

Niall has been described as “somewhere between a choirboy and a cowboy” by BBC Radio 1. Áine’s debut EP The Stray, produced by Joshua Burnside, has marked her out as one of the most compelling new voices in Irish folk.

A relaxed, sober afternoon event. Complimentary non-alcoholic beers from @_fiercemild.

Tickets are available via the link in bio.
