If I have an emotional reaction that probably means I need to fix it. But if it doesn't bother me at all but I just know it's a "no", that's where I know to hold my ground." Rozie on working with editors

Happy International Lesbian Day (Oct 8) which exists to celebrate lesbian history, diversity and culture. Here’s some of my favourite recent novels with lesbians themes. Some feature in my book The Queer Bookshelf and some are even more recent. Some characters in these books have also been understood within other sapphic identities but all resonated strongly with me as a lesbian and made me think about myself, the world, and lesbian history, diversity and culture in new ways. How many have you read? And what’s your own favourite book with lesbian themes published in the 21st century?

THE ANGELS CAME TO SODOM IN THE EVENING by Paul Russell

Set against the backdrop of the American South, the story follows Rory Singleton, a closeted man whose life is built on deep-seated secrets, beginning with his intense childhood friendships in 1970s Memphis and a formative adolescent sexual awakening at a Christian camp. As an adult, Rory becomes the pastor of a prominent, thriving megachurch, managing to suppress his desire through careful silences and furtive encounters. However, his carefully constructed world faces a devastating reckoning when he is sent to Africa to lead a homophobic crusade, forcing him to confront the unbearable contradictions of religious hypocrisy and navigate a path from the pulpit into underground queer spaces toward radical honesty and true self-acceptance.

Another fabulous day at #PortyBookFest where we've had sessions on Scottish crime fiction, playing with time in novels, politics, poetry, gender identity in writing and storytelling for children and grown-ups! We've enjoyed ourselves and hope all our audiences have too. See you tomorrow for another busy day! (Thanks to @thefirstelevenminutes for letting us use some of his photos!)

- ‘The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry’ by Gabrielle Zevin @gabriellezevin
- ‘Hamnet’ by Maggie O’Farrell @maggieofarrellofficial

A week on from Braemar Literary Festival 2026 and we’re still feeling so inspired by the talks, conversations and gatherings we enjoyed over the weekend. Our village in the Scottish Highlands became a home for ideas and imagination, with a programme filled with talks by some of the UK’s most brilliant writers and creative minds.

Our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful speakers and audiences who made the festival so special.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to Braemar for the 2027 festival. Details will be shared soon, sign up to our newsletter via the link in bio to receive priority access.

We’re so happy to be partnering with @wutheringdykesbookclub to bring you a stunning conversation between Natalie Adler (@natalie.and.chester) and local favourite Niamh Ní Mhaoileoin (@niamhsquared)!

Natalie Adler’s debut novel depicts the haunting transition of New York’s East Village during the AIDS crisis, from queer avant-garde to gentrified graveyard - join us for an Edinburgh launch of her stunning, genre-bending queer novel Waiting On A Friend.

Both heartbreaking and healing, tragic and triumphant, Waiting on a Friend is a magical retelling of queer history and a celebration of youth and camaraderie. With pathos and humour, empathy and an edge, Natalie Adler freshly reimagines the past for a new generation, reclaiming the spirit of resistance and determination that would become one of the era’s defining legacies.

Join us next Tuesday at 7PM for one of our most anticipated events of this year! Pao holds up a copy of Waiting on a Friend and Ordinary Saints while smiling outside the shop.

Between my book release (ahh!) and the dev editing class I’m taking, this month has been a chaotic whirlwind. I can’t believe it’s already time to talk about the books I read in September!

I listened to a bunch of audiobooks thanks to Libby and Hoopla and made time to read two debut novels from Bywater Books! If you haven’t read Our Last Fall yet, it’s an amazing YA book about grief and friendship. She’s on to Something comes out October 13—I was lucky enough to get an early copy at GCLS. If you enjoy thrillers and crimesolving, check it out!
