#LivingPractices ~ Please help me scream congratulations to @pascalediverlus as she celebrates over a decade as a change agent and visionary. 🥂🥳

“Living Practices embodies the idea that liberation is a dynamic, ongoing process. It is both a future we strive for and a present reality we can actively shape. We believe that our workplaces, movements, and organizations are microcosms of the society we deserve” visit http://livingpracticesconsulting.com for an opportunity to work with her team.

@pascalediverlus , I have watched you dream, build, imagine and rebuild many times over the past decade. Watching you grow your company has offered me a front row seat to your evolution as a great mind and leader. I see the level of commitment and integrity you believe in and your 10 year celebration is simply a manifestation of your impact. I will always be in the front row screaming for you, it is with honor that I am one of your biggest fans. Anyone who knows me knows I believe in our power to build new worlds and I watch you do this in practice. I could go on all day… but know that I not only love you as my sister and friend, I respect you deeply as a change maker in this city. All the flowers, because you earned it. 💐🪻🪷🌻🌺🌸🌹💐

Shout out one of my favorite photographers in the city for the event photos: @cozydq

#collectivecaretips ~ Yesterday I shared the importance of staying present in connection as a tool to survive the times. Today I wanted to remind you that it is easier to trust others when we trust ourselves. When I reach out to have a difficult conversation, my trust for myself allows me to know I will be present not only for others but for myself. I will listen when my body needs to pause or when I need to ask for a need to be met. I’m open and available for connecting BECAUSE I trust myself deeply. Learning to trust ourselves is also a practice.

#collectivecaretips ~ I am seeing folks talk about how much we need community during this time, which means we will need to up our conflict resolution skills. Imagine this: we may need to stay present and actively engage even when we don’t agree. Building the capacity to act with care rather than going our separate ways will be difficult. This too is a practice.

No, I am not saying we should stay and debate people or be abused. I am saying the ability to use our critical thinking to find a way forward together will be powerful.

#Purposework ~ Thank you 2024 for another year of doing work I believe in. Thank you for allowing me to show-up to my purpose in so many beautiful ways.

I get to write, think, speak, lead, build worlds and care for a community I love so deeply.

I get to be an author who has impact, I don’t take for granted that people come out to listen to me talk about words I wrote. I get to build a grassroots community, people sign-up and join each year - affirming its impact in their own journey.

I get to dream of new worlds and birth them with words, both written and spoken.

After a decade of building community intentionally I get to write about collective care and the theories I base my practice in, and as a cherry on top I won my first award for the work I do in community!! I am forever grateful to be witnessed.

Thank you to a phenomenal team, community and friends who collaborate with me to bring all of this to life. 🫶🏾

Thank you to the glorious generous life. 🙏🏾

#trapmystictwocents ~ May we not be the ones to limit ourselves.

My queerness taught me I don’t have to choose, I just need to allow my heart to guide me to the most expansive love it could hold.

#collectivecaretips ~ “This form of care moves away from traditional nonprofit and medical engagement because it believes in solidarity not charity- this form of care moves away the dichotomy of the helper and helped… Collective Care depends on the belief that we are all in need of care and will occupy both roles, therefore the hierarchies and sympathy often imposed on those in need of care are counter to the actual process of caring. Many of us have been indoctrinated into the belief that those who provide care are experts and morally superior. Collective Care requires relinquishing this colonial framework while acknowledging the importance of ethically engaging with the power we do have.” (Tanya Turton, P. 241)

Thank you to my mother who is the architect of care in my life and my first teacher. Shoutout to the aunties who visioned the kind of care that would save our lives and liberate our communities. Thank you to my @niazamar community who sat in workshops and my chair for a decade during my earliest practices. Deep gratitude to the @adornment.stories community because I get to not only theorize but actively engage with each of you. Thank you to the #disabilityjustice #healingjustice #blackliberation and #Queer community, scholars and activists who have languaged and practiced before me, so that my process could be possible.

It is never lost on me that while I get to language my experience and document my process I am writing because of the collective wisdom. Shout out to my ancestors who advocate for me daily. May my words be a true reflection of your guidance. 🧡

Ps. I don’t believe liberation will be found in academia, but many of us will pass through those halls craving to write authentic bodies of work while we are there. The academic works of bell hooks SAVED ME when I needed to say what I knew while citing my sources. I know for a fact this text book will be used within a class at Dal, I hope a student who needs it finds chapter 13.

#educator ~ The app packaged my post about facilitation, it actually gave me an opportunity to reflect on how grateful I am that I get to have a platform and stage to discuss so many interconnected topics. I love talking about beauty/adornment in a way that validates peoples experiences, highlights the constructs and not only the oppression but the wellbeing potential when those who are often pushed to the margins get to reclaim it for their own. I love discussing care and what it means when we move away from individuality to interdependence. I believe in our ability not only to hold institutions accountable, but to act with accountability in our daily lives. My workshops are a place I get to encourage people to interrogate their relationships with care and look at care as a tool for liberation.

In this reel it showcases various mediums from a radio interview, digital article interview, community workshop and Keynote I did in a church for a school during pride. I look back at that and I am reminded I felt different levels of nervousness in each moment, but I am grateful for the ability to find the needed words when the opportunity for collective growth presents itself.

Shoutout to technology that allowed me to have these conversations across the country in Toronto, Newfoundland and Halifax… oh yes and the flight I took. What a ride this journey has been!

It’s no surprise that it often takes more time for us in the Black community when it comes to the diverse hairstyles we wear.
As a child during the summer months, I used to hate getting my hair done because while all my friends were outside playing, I felt like I was missing out on the fun.
As an adult, coordinating my schedule for hair appointments got challenging, but whether as a child or an adult, it was always worth it. Every time, I felt like a walking piece of art!
The photo I’m sharing was taken 10 years ago. This style took the longest time I’ve ever sat to get my hair done, I won’t share how long. 🤐 Let’s just say my stylist and I watched a few movies, listened to music, and had some deep conversations. At the time, I was going through a tough period, and having those hours to talk to such an amazing person made it all the more worth it. @trapmystic @niazamar And this turned out to be one of the dopest styles I’ve ever had!

#collectivecaretips ~ Theory without practice don’t mean nothing.

We must be willing to both hold institutions accountable and reflect on how we may be acting on behalf of these systems intentionally/unintentionally.

No, we don’t need individualistic responses. Yes we do need to act with accountability for how we treat others…. Just my two cents.

#coppergirl ~ I heard the hair game looking for me👩🏾‍🦰🧚🏾‍♀️🧑🏾‍🦰

I used Adore in Paprika, Sunrise Orange, Cajun Spice and Orange Blaze. Foil panels and foil highlights. Use Paprika sparingly if you don’t want to be a red head…

Unit from ISEE hair, full lace front/ not a closure , 26 inches, straight hair.

Pro tip: shampoo and condition after colour treatment, when styling shampoo NO conditioner, just moisturizing mousse to keep the bounce and have the hair move in the wind rather than be heavy. Serum is a must also. (Please note you must condition sometimes for the unit to last- just not right before styling straight)

Fun fact: I’m still a licensed hairstylist. I still pay my membership fees because I worked so hard to get it and I just can’t give it up to completely 😩… she is the girl that brought me to the party, there would be no #adornmentstories or #jadeisatwistedgreen without her. 🫶🏾

#authenticity ~ I believe liberation is a spiritual practice. I believe we were divinely created with exactly what we need. I believe as we grow into ourselves we further our understanding of what we need and how we can be part of the collective.

That said, I keep coming back to this truth for myself. When I centre capitalism and the prescribed realities of it onto myself it is a hindrance. My greatest achievements in life have never come from acting as told but by leaning inwards and honing my deepest understanding of whom I am and what actions align with that.

So much of the culture of “more” and hustling requires us to disconnect with self and do what will lead to gains… but that has never worked for me 🤷🏾‍♀️.

I recognize that we all define liberation differently… but I often wonder if we realize that what so many of us seek is not capital as we been told, but the safety and power that it comes with; individualized freedoms to be one self… yet we may forsake and loose ourselves to get there.

Liberation though, this is collective and cannot be sustained by individual freedoms…. Hence why we must each show up willing to share our unique and authentic gifts because that is where the magic resides.

Baby, anything I do authentically permeates and ripples. I have learned this lesson from practice. 🧡
