Light that hits the darkest of places can lift a spirit home. Its work is to peel back, uncover what is hidden or heavily guarded, in order to make new again. Speckles of gold hint at what is unseen, the eternity in our hearts.

This presentation was my last for 2nd year BFA. We never wanted it to end. Who could have chosen a better 34 people to live, learn and make alongside. Dave Horton made the sky open up when he said when artists of the past exerted their prowess in skill, today’s mighty is for the artist who is sensitive.

Never had a discipline of hitting the books, the vivid imagery that spawns in my head from reading is like wildfire. This Cell Block installation is inspired by the work of Lydia Pape who was a part of the Neo-Concretism movement in Brazil whose aim was to extend geometric abstract art to include the viewer into an experience where they activated the artwork.

So many works in this final assessment brought a focus on an aspect of human experience. The sounds around us, the fondness of our daily experience of walking around campus, the deep history of the many uses of NAS as an art school, college, forgotten spaces, forbidden spaces, prostitution, a pasture for cows, a home for ibises, hidden weeds, confinement and incarceration all under the same blue sky.

2025 has been a coming of age for us sculpture students, growing despite the enormous pressure of making a living, placating institutions, absorbing and nurturing difference, some carrying the invisible weight of ill health or family heaviness. I could not be more proud of our achievements this year, including those pesky mindset ones, I am mesmerised and have a lot of admiration! To my beloved sculpture crew…We will capture the attention of the world piece by piece and knit it together with our skill and care. Now get back to work!

A belated THANK YOU to the many many people who came to the opening of Modern Melencolia last Thursday, it was so special to share our work with you all 🙏🏼💫

The show is open until next Thursday the 3rd April at @nas_library. Opening hours are 9-6pm Monday - Thursday and 9-4pm Friday.

Here is a little blurb about my lino print series ‘Event Horizon’:

‘Event Horizon’ conjures the experience of dread and powerlessness in the face of the looming climate crisis. Time marches on, the event horizon approaches but as a society we seem to be sleepwalking, immobilised by the forces of capitalism. Sudden extreme weather events shock us with glimpses of a dystopian climate future, and yet we remain paralysed, impotent. Systemic change is a mirage that seems to recede as we move towards it.
