We have become terribly good at being sensible, haven’t we?

We optimise our mornings, curate our wardrobes, organise our shelves and generally behave as though adulthood requires a respectable degree of restraint.

Then along comes Nicholas Devlin, making sculptures and furniture that look as though they have escaped from the set of a very eccentric film.

His work has something wonderfully theatrical about it. Objects become characters. A table can have an attitude. A mirror can look as though it knows something you don’t. Even the useful things seem to have a little backstage life of their own.

And suddenly, whimsy feels like something worth making room for.

And yes, I find it very refreshing. There’s no harm in taking the world a little less seriously.

Choose the chair with a little mischief in its design. Hang the theatrical mirror. Give your home a prop that serves no purpose beyond making you smile when you walk past it.

Life already has enough spreadsheets, deadlines and sensible shoes.

It could use better stage design.

A little absurdity keeps the plot moving.

And frankly, I would rather live in a house with excellent taste and questionable behaviour.

Nicholas Devlin is a Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary sculptor, who began in architecture before leaving the profession to build a practice of his own. His work sits between art, design and fantasy. Drawing on mythology, folklore, nostalgia and domestic life, he transforms mirrors, vanities, tables and architectural structures into surreal, mischievous characters. His sculptural furniture has a theatrical quality, that’s somewhere between functional object and artwork. Devlin describes his creations as “mythological house spirits,” giving everyday objects an unexpected personality and a distinctly playful presence.

@nicholas_devlin and I began this commission in January 2025 — from concept to reality. Grateful to Nicholas for creating a bedroom made for dreaming under the clouds ☁️
