Check out this effortlessly cool Shed Project, created entirely from our sweet chestnut cladding and sawn timber 👌

Commissioned by Nick Couch and created by Gavin Coyle @gavincoylestudio – the objective was to design and build a compact, carefully detailed shed for storing and displaying gardening essentials, using locally sourced British timber.

We think they have created a super sweet piece of design that will complement its surroundings rather than compete.

Incorporating timber cladding into the design is always a good idea and offers both practical and visual appeal 😍

A lovely day with other people who have volunteered at Derek Jarman's garden at Prospect Cottage on Dungeness. Late May and early July is when it is looking most colourful. Thanks @j.bruce.garden for organising

It’s easy to see Prospect’s lack of fence as a creative choice - one reflecting Derek’s dislike of societal barriers. However on Dungeness such structures are not allowed, indicative of the informal tenancy arrangements which allowed a community of fishing families to evolve here.

Over the years gorse has been introduced by some residents as a way to demarcate their boundaries but risks aggressive suckers which can become unmanageable. These thickets are welcome habitat for wildlife but the oil in gorse’s leaves also make it highly flammable - hazardous as it encroaches on old wooden cottages and fishing boats.

Derek planted circles of Gorse near the cottage which despite the nibblings of rabbits grow quickly and need regular pruning to keep them in bounds. Burning the stumps not only helps clear the unsightly (and very prickly) duff but also encourages healthy regrowth. In a few weeks green shoots will begin to emerge, satisfying against the blackened stems.

Great to have an enthusiastic team to help with this job. Thank you to everyone who helped with this. I always enjoy the effect of the smoke drifting through the sculptures - echoes of the alchemical rituals that Derek explored in films like In the Shadow of the Sun - a Super 8 he made in 1981 before he came to Dungeness.

There are so many ways that aspects of his art that find expression in the garden, including the lack of fence. For while it may have not been a choice - these barriers are a key feature in his work symbolic of the ghettoisation of the queer community caused by homophobia and HIV.

Swipe to see more of the process 🔥👀 as well as some extra shots of the fig’s annual prune. This tree benefits from the most sheltered part of the garden - protected by the cottage from the salt-laden north winds. Recently improved by the addition of a garden bench by Hester Thompson this protected corner provides a welcome refuge in an otherwise exposed garden. 💛🌬️🖤

Wonderful to have another group of volunteers in the garden. Thank you to everyone who came to lend a hand over the weekend. It is such a great opportunity to share the garden with a group of enthusiastic people brought together by a shared appreciation of Derek and Keith’s legacy.

March is an important time at Prospect where we clear away the remains of the previous year and get ready for the approaching Spring. Dead stems and old seed heads are removed - grateful for the structure they gave during winter but satisfying to cut back to green shoots. Removing this organic material helps prevent the build up of protosoil in the shingle which would encourage more grass and weeds into the skirts of the shrubs. The self-sowers are welcome characters in the garden but too many effects sense of negative space provided by the rivers of shingle that run between the shrubs.

Recognising and editing these self-sown plants is crucial at an early stage to help encourage desired plants like horned poppy and viper’s bugloss while keeping other potentially more dominant species at bay.

It is also opportunity to renovate the shrubs with a hard back on the Santolina and gorse. These plants will quickly recover and while may seem a shame to lose the flowers for this year the satisfyingly tight form of the regrowth more than makes up for it. We prune these woody plants on a cycle so we preserve some flowers. A light trim after flowering also helps encourage a bushier form. The Elder trees are also pruned to prevent the limbs from overextending and being at risk of damage from violent winds. Beautiful also to appreciate the vibrant lichen which so well compliments the cottage’s window frames.

Despite a bitter wind and more than enough rain to start we were blessed with still and sunny weather. Thanks again for everyone that came to help - carefully supervised by Frida and Nohni - and to the @dungenesssnack for another two rounds of delicious lunches 🐟. 🖤💪💛

Last weekend - a magic time volunteering at Prospect Cottage on Dungeness. The former home of Derek Jarman and Keith Collins.

Extreme wind on the Saturday, Jonny @j.bruce.garden gave us a tour of the house and garden. Looking at the new Phlomis trial beds and learning about how Derek gardened the place. Looks like a dry gravel garden, but historically heaps of peat were added into planting pits, so some parts are fairly fertile. Ended the day with an very stormy swim at dusk with @venus_gardens

Eating at the @dungenessfishhut every day with the daily catch.

Lovely and calm on the Sunday, weeding in the sun, my freckles came out a bit. Burning the gorse and santolina prunings, ending with huge blue skies and a blissful early spring swim, with rainbow 🌈 sundogs in the sky.

The garden just gets two main hits in spring and autumn with volunteers. If you'd like to volunteer, message @j.bruce.garden . Thanks very much for hosting us Jonny.
