3 months since we left Las Vegas 🇺🇸➡️🇫🇷
We drove to LA with 2 dogs 🐕🐕, 4 suitcases, 2 carry-ons, tears in our eyes, and hope in our hearts. After a couple of days in Redondo Beach with friends and ocean walks 🌊, we boarded a non-stop flight from LAX to Paris—one of the most stressful days of our lives.
From checking in the dogs (and watching them disappear 😭), to the immense relief of seeing them waiting for us in Paris ❤️, to loading everything into two rental SUVs with the help of kind strangers—every step reminded us how much we were being carried by others’ generosity.
The next day, with family reunited, 5 humans + 2 dogs set off on a 10-hour drive to the south of France 🚗. Castles, vineyards, rivers, changing landscapes… and finally our temporary home in Saint-Cyprien.
We explored the coast, shared meals, watched some brave souls swim in the Mediterranean 🏊‍♂️ (the dogs are still undecided 😂), and slowly said goodbye as everyone returned home. Then it was just the two of us—and the dogs—and reality set in. Lots of rest, lots of processing, lots of quiet 😴.
Life here is beautiful. We’re close to the sea, 20 minutes from Spain 🇪🇸, near a lively town, and slowly building community. Now we’re searching for a year-round rental—challenging, but we’re confident we’ll find our next “home base” while exploring more of Europe.
How does it feel?
Intellectually, we know this was the right move. Emotionally, it’s hard. We miss our house, our neighborhood, our routines, and most of all our daughter and her partner back in Vegas. I miss the feeling of home—and trust it will come again.
One last thought:
I’ve been an immigrant most of my life. I felt welcomed in the U.S. for decades—until I didn’t. Watching the news from afar is painful, especially when history feels uncomfortably familiar. Still, I hold on to the belief that the ideals symbolized by the Statue of Liberty—welcome, dignity, humanity—can matter again.
✨ More to come. Thanks for being part of our journey.
