My new @cbs58news, cutie, friend!! @nickgross3 nice meeting you, again, last night! You were definitely the life of the party. Your friends were enjoying themselves as well. Going on stage had to have been a rush. Next time I'll be brave enough, and go up with the lady's. Happy Fourth of July! Marquette sophomore Nick Gross reflects on an unexpected encounter with Pope Leo during a pilgrimage to Rome with fellow Knights of Columbus members. 🤝

The fateful handshake that now lives as a framed photo inside Nick’s dorm room nearly never happened. “It took an act of God,” Gross said.

“We were supposed to be outside in the area where the Popemobile comes through Vatican Square. But a torrential downpour moved everyone inside.”

Before they knew it, the knights found themselves standing in a center aisle as the Pope approached. “This is happening,” they said to each other.

They draped a Marquette University flag over a gate, which drew Pope Leo’s attention. He approached, shook hands and said two words that continue to resonate.

“Go Marquette.”

Last Friday, several of our MUCR members had the awesome opportunity to join young Republicans from across Wisconsin to hear Kyle Mann from The Babylon Bee speak! A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible — it was inspiring to hear from Kyle and so many other great speakers!

Congratulations to Marquette University student Nicholas Gross, who has been selected to receive the prestigious St. John Paul II Award for Youth & Young Adult Leadership at the Vatican II Awards!

At Marquette, Gross serves as a retreat leader, working with the Midnight Run service club, leading men’s Bible study and as part of the Marquette chapter of the Knights of Columbus. In his free time, he enjoys prayer, keeping active outdoors and at the gym, public speaking, reading, writing and podcasting.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee established the Vatican II Awards in 1991 to honor men, women and young adults who exemplify the Catholic Church’s vision set forth in the Second Vatican Council.
