uhh hey platers

I’ve been thinking a lot about why I do any of this. like for what even.

I spend at least 5 hours a week on my fking phone; encouraging hundreds of you to go out into your communities across the western world; taking photos of other people’s private property and tailgating them on the highway. while offline, I front the cost of dad hats I sometimes breakeven on, meanwhile slipping deeper into a automobile-dependent climate-doomerist rhetoric sandpit through short-form media osmosis and neurochemical neurosis.

all this, with the virtue signalling and the winding prose, just so I can stress out about how many of these vanity flick mother fuckers you would all end up sending me every day.

god damn it. can’t i allow myself to enjoy any simple pleasure before i tear it out of my chest and find a way to commoditize it? glass, stones and houses. i think i do this kind of thing a lot. and for a long time before I realized what I was doing. I just love a good scheme. always have

more relevantly, if I’m going to keep doing this platewatch thing, and if I’m going to be respectful of what we’ve built together, I need to treat this whole process a little bit differently.

platewatch dm’s like a river. every week, more and more platecontributors join the headwaters that flow. it used to be just a trickle, but now the current has grown significantly. I’ve tried building more dams. I’ve recruited a management counsel.

I’d like to imagine my new approach to be emblematic of dipping just my fingers in the water by the riverbank. less intensive, easier to holistically enjoy, also probably invokes a similar level of serendipity, that I would choose one plate, over others. I’ll probably start to lean back on the cataloging and the papers and whatnot; unless I have a theme I’m working towards, or a guestpost. I’ll stay focused.

let me know what you think and what you envision for the future of platewatch.
