Meet this week’s collector, Nick! Nick started collecting with his younger brother in 1999 when both the card and Red/Blue games were released in the US. For Nick, it was so exhilarating to not only rip a pack, but to get a hit from that pack and put it on display in the front page of his binder. Like many kids back then, he brought those binders everywhere, especially to school where him and his brother would trade during lunch and recess — meaning their childhood cards were not exactly in the best condition. They didn't have all the cards, and didn’t even know that 1st edition or shadowless existed, but the select few that they did have really made the two appreciate them.

In the early to mid 2000’s they stopped collecting to pursue other interests. Fast forward to late 2019/early 2020 when he really started collecting again. Nick found his old binders and basically continued from where he left off collecting the early WOTC era. At this point he had a few graded comics from CGC, and his local comic shop told him that CGC would soon be grading Pokémon cards.

“When I purchased my first CGC slab I immediately noticed how nice and clear the cases were, which is basically what made me want to grade exclusively with them going forward. My childhood dream of collecting every card from those early sets came true. Now I’m slowly building back my collection and then some, cherry picking cards and looking for CGC 8.5s NM/M or higher.

There’s a reason why each of us collects Pokemon cards. It takes me back to a simpler time when we didn’t have to worry about adult responsibilities, and had no other care in the world. We were just kids trying to collect them all, and now we’re adults who are trying to do the same thing, just encased in clear plastic slabs.”
