2026 is turning out to be a fantastic year for jazz releases. The latest from Canadian saxophonist and bandleader Nicola Miller was released last month and I reviewed it for PopMatters. Link in bio.

"The fourth and final instalment of Humbucker Music’s residency in the Tranzac’s Southern Cross Lounge features a set from local noise legend, Brian Ruryk. Ruryk has been active since the 80’s, emerging initially from the experimental post punk underground before evolving his practice toward a strange and slapstick collision of elements. Wielding busted guitars, electronics and garbage Ruryk builds surrealist collages in real time while mirroring the musical gestures with volatile and often comedic performances. He tosses his hurls his various implements across the room, rubs and smashes them together, dumps Rubbermaid containers of junk over his head, all the while frantically clawing away at his guitar. His strange and energetic performances are utterly singular and always leave audiences in a state of giddy perplexity.

Humbucker Music, meanwhile, is a new improvising quartet founded by Nick Storring and featuring Mira Martin-Gray, Colin Cudmore, and Jason Doell all of who perform using their namesake—acoustic guitar humbucker pickups—which are used both to amplify and sound a variety of metal objects and instruments. "For the third edition of Humbucker Music's residency at the Tranzac we are delighted to be presenting a solo set from the inimitable Brooklyn-based, Toronto-born guitarist Sandy Ewen.

Ewen’s audio practice focuses on extended guitar techniques, improvisation, graphic scores, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her unique approach to guitar incorporates a wide array of implements – railroad spikes, sidewalk chalk, threaded bolts, steel wool, and other items become an arsenal of abstraction. Ewen has worked extensively with film makers, dancers, poets, and musicians to create films, audio recording, sound interventions, and performance art and is an intrepid and active live performer. Her ongoing projects include duo with bassist Damon Smith, the trio Etched in the Eye, and a duo with Tom Carter called Spiderwebs. Her extensive discography includes collaborations with the likes of Maria Chavez, Weasel Walter, Violeta Garcia, Roscoe Mitchell, Keith Rowe, Kevin Shea, Lisa Cameron, Henry Kaiser, and Aaron Russell of the band Weird Weeds (of which she was also a member.)

I always tell myself that this is never going to happen again, but guess what? I’M BEHIND ON MY MUSIC REVIEWS. AGAIN. If you follow me on ye olde socials, you probably know that I’ve been hit with some of life’s more annoying/scary curveballs over the past several weeks, so…my mind and my attention have been elsewhere. But we’re working through it. What you’re seeing in this post are the excellent new music releases that I’m currently writing about. All top-shelf stuff and I can’t wait for you to read my words and hopefully listen to the related tunes. Onward!

Today FLOWERS NOT BOMBS compilation airs on @n10.as in Montreal at 12 noon eastern. Artwork is by the awesome @busraplayskeys

Flowers Not Bombs is the second in a series of grassroots benefit compilations supporting Palestinian-led mutual aid groups on the ground in Gaza. Organized between Palestinians in the diaspora and Palestinians fighting to remain on their land in Gaza, these projects support daily survival, education, access to food, and community self-determination in the face of genocide and ongoing colonization.

The compilation will be released by @beacon_sound (Portland) digitally and as a limited-edition run of cassettes, and launched publicly on Radio AlHara (Bethlehem).

The proceeds from this second compilation will support on-the-ground work in Gaza by:

Arab Group for the Protection of Nature @apnorg – an Amman-based organization helping to restore Gaza’s environmental and food systems through activities including olive tree planting, well rehabilitation, fishing support, and farmer-to-family food distribution, among others.

"The proceeds from the album will support APN’s Revive Gaza’s Farmland project, which seeks to combat the weaponization of food and the manmade famine in Gaza by strengthening local food production. The project focuses on rehabilitating Gaza’s agricultural sector, helping farmers restore their livelihoods, countering the impacts of the blockade, and advancing food sovereignty."

Palestinian Teacher Creativity Center – a Palestinian educational association dedicated to protecting and advancing every child’s right to education, especially in times of crisis. Through creative learning, teacher empowerment, and community engagement, TCC helps children reclaim spaces of hope, expression, and belonging amid uncertainty and conflict.

During the war on Gaza, its emergency response has reached more than 40,500 children, engaged over 600 trained teachers and volunteers, and supported approximately 25,300 parents and caregivers, affirming education as a vital source of protection, dignity, and hope for the future.
