Colorado Amethyst Vein Discovered🟣

When something special is coming out of the dirt, I enjoy being able to learn from the deposit, prospector, and share the excitement. This short clip showcases a hydrothermal amethyst vein network that Nico Jackson discovered in northern Colorado. Amethyst is very uncommon in this region and signifies a skillful uncovering. The rock we were working in is an altered but very solid monzogranite. Procuring specimens from these bedrock-locked pockets is therefore slow and gritty but rewarding considering the deep purple and smoky shades. Some crystals from this locale show red hematite caps, a Colorado lookalike of Ontario's esteemed Thunder Bay amethyst. Check out Nico's accounts to see some of the best specimens from the deposit.

Stellar Arizona Fluorite! This stunning piece also features thick, clear blades of Calcite, white blades of Barite and greyish Cerussites. Embedded in the matrix of Fluorite are a couple healthy chunks of Galena, giving the piece some real weight. Another fine piece for my personal collection. I mean, everything is for sale at the right price. But I like this one too much to ask a reasonable price for it 😎

Phantom Core of the Specular Stardust Pocket

A unique double sided cluster with specular hematite phantoms found with Nico Jackson in the Tarryall Mountains, Colorado. Single-sided clusters formed two opposing wall zones of the vein. Crystal found in the center were a bit more mystifying.✨

In countries where regulations are weak or unenforced, kids as young as 7 work long hours in dangerous conditions for just a few dollars a day.

These crystals often end up in shops and online stores with no mention of where they came from — or who paid the real price.

There are ethical alternatives. Small-scale miners and local sellers who prioritize fair labor, safety, and environmental responsibility do exist, but they need support to stay in business.

Been thinking about the rocks we hunt for lately. Crystals and agates are pretty common and obvious ones. These types of rocks need time and space to form. And usually, that space they find is down in the earth, where rocks that the earth formed from below have left some void and space. That space has certain mineral content, water content, pressure and temperature to form a very wide and beautiful variety of earths little crystals and microcrystalline structures.

It’s cool how some of those interactions are a result of below-the-crust rocks and minerals interacting with things above the crust, namely our ocean waters rising and receding over time and filling the cavities and caverns with mineral rich waters. Then time allows for those solutions to settle and form into crystals, agates and other things. Somehow all the pieces and parts say to eachother “hey, let’s get seriously geometric about this”, and it’s awesome.

Then that happens with fossils too, so organic materials, they decompose over time, but just like in empty voids, our minerals and other natural conditions mentioned above are powerful enough to take over that old organic material and leave a picture in the rocks of the past for us. Sometimes in exceedingly beautiful fashion.

These are all dots I’m trying to connect as I learn about the earth and what it has to tell us. If I missed any key geological concept that you think adds to the conversation, please comment! Let’s keep learning stuff.

Should we start a Mini Seedlings baby group in the dome? 👀
