When I saw the meme hold my beer for 2021... I had no idea how relevant that would be. Still smiling... and still working at ABC Gold Coast.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

So great to be back on ABC’s Spin Cycle with Nicole Dyer and fellow Labradorian Lucy this morning!

A mixed bag of topics this morning, from the Tones and I NRL grand final fallout, to smart glasses and phone addiction.

One conversation I particularly loved was around Gen Z starting to step back from their phones and social media.

It tied in with research I heard from @_orygen_ recently about how frequently young people encounter harmful content online — in the study, mental health content appeared every 39 seconds, suicide-related content every 2–3 minutes and disordered eating content every 8 minutes.

We spend a lot of time telling young people to manage their screen time, while the platforms are designed to keep them there. So all power to younger generations recognising the impact and choosing to step away.

What a night! ✨
We were delighted to welcome Liane Moriarty to HOTA to discuss her latest novel, ‘Big Little Truths’, in conversation with the fabulous Nicole Dyer.
Guests also enjoyed a beautiful acoustic performance by Natalia, book sales and signings, and drinks by the lake overlooking the Surfers Paradise skyline.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening.

A huge thank you to ABC Gold Coast Morning presenter @nicoleadyer for giving us the opportunity to share our story with the local community.

We were able to put the call out for new remedial riding horses, riders, volunteers and sponsors, with enquiries already coming through. It’s a wonderful reminder of the power of community and the support behind Valley Riding Develops Abilities. If you’d like to support our mission, you can donate through our GoFundMe, linked at the top of our Instagram page.

Again Thank you, Nicole and @abcradionational, for helping us spread the word.

📅 June recap

🏅 Attended the Gold Coast Australian of the Year Awards, where I was proud to represent finalist Ree and accept her certificate on her behalf.

It was also lovely to later present it to her at her Multifaith Concert. Congratulations again to all the finalists and winners.

⛳ Spent a few hours at the Gold Coast Charity Golf Day with the Gold Coast Community Fund and Cycling Without Age Gold Coast. Thanks to the Community Fund for supporting our organisation this year. We had a great time giving golfers the chance to “cheat” with a trishaw ride to their next hole!

🐾 Joined the Animal Welfare League Queensland board and team at the Gold Coast Fundraising Ball, which raised an incredible $156,230 to help animals in need.

🎸 Enjoyed Cooly Rocks On with the family.

💜 Caught up with my Fibromyalgia ME/CFS support group for our Wednesday art sessions and board meeting.

📻 Joined Nicole Dyer on ABC Gold Coast’s Spin Cycle, this time alongside my former colleague (and PR superstar!) Wayne Hickson.

🎶 Checked out the Upbeat Arts concert.

🎓 Returned to Bond University as a guest lecturer, talking with public relations students about building and managing online communities.

⛸️ Kicked off the school holidays at Disney On Ice before heading to Brisbane for the Queensland Games Festival and the CJ Hendry pop-up exhibition.

💛 June also marked the end of my 12-month contract as Project Lead of the Gold Coast Suicide Prevention Collaborative.

While I’m sad to be finishing in the role, I’m incredibly grateful to have worked alongside such a passionate and dedicated group of people. I’ve been involved with the Collaborative since 2023 when I was with Black Dog Institute, so it has been a privilege to help support its growth over the past year.

The relationships, ideas and commitment around that table give me so much hope for the future of suicide prevention on the Gold Coast. I can’t wait to see what the Collaborative achieves next.

Thanks, June. On to the next chapter.

It was great to be back on ABC Gold Coast this morning!

I joined Nicole Dyer and fellow panellist Wayne Hickson to chat about:

📺 One Nation’s decision to air political advertising during State of Origin and whether political ads actually cut through with voters.

⚽ The World Cup and our favourite sporting moments. I shared that dad was at the 66 World Cup game where England scored their controversial Wembley Goal

🥧 The closure of the iconic Coolangatta Pie Shop after more than 60 years and the other small businesses we miss.

As always, thanks to Nicole and the ABC Gold Coast team for having me on!

Doing interviews from behind a laptop in a hotel room always feels weird, but this was very fun … with Nicole Dyer for ABC Gold Coast @nicoleadyer … she couldn’t have been nicer or more fun to talk to ❤️❤️ I’m coming to the Gold Coast on 7th May for an event at Broadreach Library with Bern Young. Hope to see you there!
