5 things I didn’t know about Ducth before moving in Amsterdam:

1. If you’re staying for more than 4 months, you have to register at the Town Hall — and start paying for health insurance, garbage and water taxes.
2. Everyone is so quiet on the metro and train, even during rush hour.
3. Everyone speaks perfect English — they grow up watching movies in English without dubbing.
4. People don’t really use curtains at home. They leave their windows wide open, even at night — it’s a cultural thing about having nothing to hide and also to let the sunshine’s light enter in the apartment during daytime.
5. Dutch directness is very real. They’ll tell you exactly what they think — not to be rude, just to be honest.
