The deeper I go into the history of yoga, the harder it becomes to say “yoga teaches that…” 🥹. Because well, … which yoga are we talking about?

Today we often perceive yoga as if it were one coherent ancient system. But historically, yoga practices actually appear across a whooole bunch of religious and philosophical traditions tbroughout hundreds, maybe thousands, of years.

Those traditions sometimes agreed, borrowed from one another, and also influenced one another. Plus, they also disagreed about some pretty damn fundamental things.

For example:
What is this “Self” we keep talking about?
What is consciousness?
What causes suffering?
What is liberation?
What role does the body play?

And as you may have guessed, there wasn’t one universally accepted answer (which is why it can get confusing as a yoga student, and also a yoga teacher as it’s often not discussed in teacher trainings).

But personally, I actually think that makes yoga MORE interesting, not less. Because we’re investigating a conversation and practice that has been unfolding, changing and crossing religious and philosophical boundaries for a veerry long time.

So perhaps “yoga philosophy” is useful shorthand (and we don’t always have time to give a historical rundown in a regular yoga class!).

Didn’t want to forget leaving these here…because I had soo much fun that day!!

Teaching yoga at Bryant Park in NYC a couple of months ago was one of the most memorable experiences of my professional career - I was blown away by the number of people that showed up to move and breathe and meditate with me (bc damn it was HOT that day!) despite the temperatures 🥹🩷.

And let me tell you - watching you all move in unison is truly something really special. My heart is still so full from that evening.

Big thanks again to the organizers @bryantparknyc and @calmmom_kristendollard for making this happen.

And, of course, also to some of my yoga besties @kirramichel @jodie_lucie_h @philthy_nyc @katiefcarey for supporting me in person 🥰 love y’all!! I feel grateful and very blessed 🫶🏼
