Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself. We talk a lot about the importance of forgiving others. About letting go of resentment, releasing the past, and finding a way forward.

But what happens when someone offers us forgiveness and we struggle to accept it?

In this conversation with Nic Stone & Tracy Bonham at Story in Nashville, Nic Stone shared something that really stayed with me: learning to be forgiven can be just as difficult as learning to forgive.

She spoke openly about a period in her life when, despite publishing multiple books and appearing successful from the outside, she was navigating profound personal struggles.
It's a reminder that what we see of someone's life rarely tells the whole story.

We can be accomplishing incredible things while quietly falling apart.
And rebuilding doesn't always begin with doing more or achieving something new.

Sometimes it begins with allowing ourselves to receive the grace and compassion we so readily encourage others to extend.
Forgiveness doesn't erase what happened. But it can create space for us to grow beyond it.

🎙️ My full conversation with Nic Stone and Tracy Bonham is available on The Better Mindset Podcast.

What's been harder for you: forgiving someone else or forgiving yourself?

BOOKSTORE: Greenlight Bookstore (@greenlightbklyn)
LOCATION: 686 Fulton Street, Fort Greene, Brooklyn
FOUNDERS: Jessica Stockton Bagnulo (@jsbagnulo) & Rebecca Fitting (@arrbecca)

Founded in October 2009, Greenlight Bookstore began with a shared ambition between two booksellers, Jessica Stockton Bagnulo and Rebecca Fitting, to create an independent bookstore that reflected and served its surrounding community. After a neighborhood survey identified a bookstore as the business Fort Greene residents most wanted, the founders developed a Community Lender Program that raised more than $70,000 in startup capital from people who believed the bookstore should exist. In a very literal sense, Greenlight is a bookstore that its community helped build.

For me, Greenlight will always be associated with the evening I learned the meaning of that Wayne Gretzky quote: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

On September 5, 2017, I attended the launch of Jesmyn Ward’s (@jesmynward) Sing, Unburied, Sing, where she was in conversation with Ayana Mathis. This was two months before Two months later, Jesmyn would win her second National Book Award for Fiction, becoming the first woman and first Black writer to win that award twice, and the fifth writer in American letters to hold the distinction.

Earlier that day, Jesmyn had appeared on LIT, a show I was doing at the time, and I was both incredibly grateful for how generously she’d given me her time and deeply self-conscious about how much of it I’d already taken. Now, there’s an informal tradition in publishing where, following a literary event, everyone heads somewhere nearby for drinks and conversation.

While I wanted to go, I was thinking to myself, “Yo, she’s already given you enough of her time. Give her some breathing room.” So I went home.

Later that evening, I sent Jesmyn a DM thanking her again for everything. She responded by telling me that I she would’ve invited me out but figured I was busy.

Sometimes shooting your shot is giving someone else to fill in a blank that only they can.

If you’re in Fort Greene, stop by, buy a book, and shoot that shot.

BOOKSTORE: McNally Jackson Books @mcnallyjackson
LOCATION: 134 Prince Street, SoHo, Manhattan
FOUNDER: Sarah McNally

ABOUT THE BOOKSTORE:
Founded in 2004 by Sarah McNally, a former book editor whose parents established the Canadian bookstore chain McNally Robinson, McNally Jackson originally opened at 52 Prince Street as McNally Robinson. In 2008, the store became independent and was renamed McNally Jackson, incorporating the surname of Sarah’s then-husband, editor Christopher Jackson, the now publisher of @oneworldbooks. In 2023, the bookstore relocated to its current home at 134 Prince Street.

A place where different forms of cultural production can inform, inspire, and materially support one another. This is the McNally Jackson that Jack Harlow frequented for inspiration while recording his album Monica. Following the album’s release, he returned that inspiration by purchasing books for people who visited the bookstore.

Of the 22 books I’ve published to date, I found 10 of them at McNally Jackson. That’s nearly half of the books I’ve helped bring into the world were sitting on the shelves of a single bookstore.

Swipe through to see the ten books I found at McNally Jackson. And if you’re in SoHo: pay them a visit and, whether it’s one of the books I published or not, buy something that speaks to you.

What an amazing weekend at the Tween Read Book Festival (@tweensread )with so many passionate readers, librarians, and authors! 📚💕

I’ve always wanted to join this festival, so I’m SO happy I finally got to experience it!

Meeting readers in person like this always makes my day. Seeing your big smiles, hearing how much you enjoy books, and getting to talk about manga with you means SO much to me. These are the moments that remind me why I love creating books for young readers!

Thank you to everyone who came to see me, talked with me, asked questions, and shared your love of books and manga with me. You made this weekend really special for me!!

I hope I can come back again someday! 💕

It was such a pleasure to be a guest at the Back to School Black Family Cookout & Book Fair hosted by @healingjusticesb at @sbplibrary 's Central Library Plaza.

We had a variety of books for folks, but we're especially proud to have had locals Sojourner Kincaid Rolle's Free At Last: A Juneteenth Poem and @raewynngrant 's memoir and new children's book You Belong in the Wild. Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant even stopped by and signed!

#TweensRead26 but make it about ME. JK, it’s still about the kids but it’s about the authors that make my kids think I’m cool.
The authors that they had this year were so stacked! I bought so many books to put in the library and the kids started a list of who wants which book first on the bus back to school. I also had the kids running around getting the books personalized for the authors they wanted to meet but didn’t have the money to buy their books — sorry to all of you who had to write out “Sablatura” so many times! When I have your books to recommend and they just LOVE THEM and they talk to their friends about them and review them and check them out over and over — that’s when they think I’ve done something special and makes them think I’m cooler than I am because I know what they need when they need it. And we can’t do that without you.
