It’s been a busy couple of weeks with visits to Sydney and then almost a week of working and arty-ing in Tāmaki. I’m so sorry I didn’t manage to catch up with everyone but I’m super glad to see and meet all the people I did.

What a week! Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival where we got to screen our film and be in the presence of legendary artist Sandy Adsett, ngā mihi Jade for your manaaki, flew home arrived in time for the NZ premiere of TENZING so proud of Desray Armstrong producer extraordinaire. Then on to Shane Cotton’s book launch at Britomart and got to hang out with my cheeky talented cuzzies and into the mahi of the Arts Foundation - Board Meeting & Laureate Luncheon an intimate celebration for the Laureates of 2026. Sneak preview of Laureate book celebrating 25yrs of Laureates. Tonight we get to do it all again with their friends whanau and the Arts community at large. Cant wait to reveal this cohort of talent to Aotearoa and the world!

Explore this work by Alexis Neal “a visual whakapapa”, with Educator Geva Downey. This work is on display now as part of a group show featuring six leading printmakers, ‘Whakawhiti: Toi WhakaTAA <> Toi WhakaATA’, running 1 August – 22 November 2026.

Neal’s ongoing body of work, To Lay, To Carry, To Hold, explores how identity and customary practice continue to shape contemporary material culture. Structured around the framework of a pepeha, the project unfolds across three interconnected bodies of work. The first is a suite of seven finely woven domestic whāriki, arranged in a narrative sequence and inspired by tukutuku — reimagining a visual whakapapa of introducing oneself.

Everything comes from somewhere.

The title lettering for TOITŪ: Visual Sovereignty carries a direct whakapapa back to Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art.

We took the distinctive letterforms from the original exhibition identity, pulled them apart, then reassembled them into something new to allow the film to stand in its own voice while remaining connected to where it came from.

Same whakapapa. New expression.
