The Magic of Small Talk Studio New York based Small Talk Studio, run by Nick Williams and Phil Ayers, is a seasonal clothing brand known primarily for their elaborate custom hand-drawn garments. The studio started from a small operation of made-to-order custom pieces, hand drawn with markers on vintage garments. Since Fall 2023, the duo started balancing their output between the made-to-order garments, seasonal collections, and special projects. Their pieces are created with a sense of elevated play and artistry, but designed with everyday wear in mind. Sourcing fabrics primarily from Japan and manufacturing in New York, everything is executed with a high degree of craftsmanship and attention to detail, much like the custom garments the brand was founded upon. Small Talk’s practice revolves around research and experimentation, sourcing imagery and inspiration from a broad and disparate range of sources and working to create new contexts for their garments and the visual world behind them. Taking the striking imagery they create for the 1-of-1 wearable art pieces and creating a broader scale of a collection isn’t an easy adjustment to make, but the playfulness and attention to detail remains intact on every item delivered by the studio.

Mudita Editorial “Arguably the least well-known of the four Buddhist virtues (the other three being loving kindness, compassion, and equanimity), Mudita requires one to tap into a particular strain of empathy. This is most likely a result of its subtlety and the exorbitant nuance dormant within it.” Text: @nighttrain Art: @buggiftshop
