Honored to co-produce, record & mix “East Side Love Story”, @stpanther’s debut album, out 11/20 on @drinksumwtr. They’re truly a special talent with a special voice and message. St. Panther always has a vision and I’m here to support that first and foremost; from there we’ve built a really fulfilling and meaningful bond in both or friendship and work. This album has been an extension of their production and intention. This project and their journey to it has been an incredible labor of love but we’ll save the long story for another time. Go bump “east side girl” and pre order the album now! …we have a collab song on there too, I think it beats Kerosene.

Album Two. “Why Not You, Brother?” Out Exclusively on Bandcamp “Pay What You Want/Can”. Scroll for Instructions. Link in Bio.

I started writing this album in July 2023 after a major label meeting and having a panic attack driving to LAX. The idea of going home empty handed, back into the things I was leaving sent me into hyperventilation. At that time everything I’d ever wanted was “one yes away”, as I’d say in all my team meetings. I feel differently now.

“Fifth car jacking on the highway, where I stay” were the first lyrics I wrote. Informed by a wave of carjackings and m*rders that summer in my hometown. The next line and the lines after were me fighting through the weight of those realities. Also the weight of the fact that not so deep down, I feel the same chaotic misdirection. That I understood being given cards you didn’t want and using whatever tools you might have to alchemize a different/better reality. A gun, a fist, a mic, powder, a rock, a horn, a guitar, a degree, a favor, a loan, a lie. Plans of an album full of intentionally hit structured records palatable for everyone, turned into a soul jazz rap record about asking for more. Demanding more… from the world and myself.

The production, writing and recording of my first two albums happened from 2021 to 2024. I haven’t written a bar since.

I’m crossing the desert to my treasure shortly. I’ll have the end of this trilogy once the journey is complete.

Thank you to all the homies who helped in any way make this happen!

Enjoy!

Why Not You, Brother? The second full length album by Lawrence Matthews - Out Now on @bandcamp as a “Pay-What-You-Want” release.

“There were times of great pain where I naively asked God why? Why is this sight mine? Why is it my job to turn this page? To be shaped and fashioned into something so different that I often don’t recognize my own eyes? Why must I see and feel so deeply? Why is the pain of this knowledge mine to bear, to share?... Why do I feel alone in this? Why fashion me into a dying archetype? Why give me a dying world? Why am I going through these things?

God answered, are you so special that you can live without pain? without suffering? without the cycles of life and death? Are you so above nature and humanity that you don’t deserve to experience a life? Have the gifts I’ve given you, in your mind, become your own? Why not you?

In times of great doubt I’d think of my dreams and the life I want to see in front of my feet. I’d catalog the amount of systems before me that would like to make those things impossible. Where I come from, who I am, my lack, the world turning downward?

And in my cosmic stubbornness I’d answer, well why not me??… Why can’t I have everything I want out of this life? Why CAN’T I bring everything I desire into reality? Why can’t I be happy? Why can’t I grow? Why can’t I carry the load of this life? Why can’t I bring every beautiful and healing thing to me? Why can’t I be great? I actually refuse anything else because why NOT me?! Aren’t I an extension of the cosmos?

I have not found any reason good enough for why I can’t… and neither should you!

We open our phones and every other post tells us what basic human rights we will never have and what we lost forever. I refuse to accept that.

You and I can have everything we want out of this life and I believe we should demand it, fight for it, live for it!”
