Part of what we have lost this year are rituals; the things we normally do to mark changes, to say hello or good-bye or thank you or congratulations or I’m sorry. When we moved into our beautiful Brooklyn apartment; we had a huge party. It was such a fun night; dozens and dozens of people came and we drank & ate & laughed late into the night. When we left, we left to echos of an empty room, the muted sounds of a subdued city, strangely wide open roads.

This is Nika on our last day. My heart swells with gratitude and sadness when I look at this. She grew into an adult here. She will never be a child again. I fell sick with chronic illness here and my life changed forever. We built our family here. We changed ourselves here. We changed our family here. In this spacious apartment, in this city that never stops moving. In this city we didn’t get a chance to say good-bye to. No parties, just leaving.

This is my last run in the Brooklyn Promenade. Our last 4th of July on the roof. Our last family photo before Eddie passed. Our last drive across the Brooklyn Bridge (my favorite landmark in all of the city.) We’ll be back; for visits of course but we also we suspect we’ll live there again someday. I’m grateful to New York. I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to say a proper good-bye.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’m sorry if you’ve missed saying good-bye, too. Or hello. Or congratulations. Or I see you; I remember you on this day. I’m trying to remember to keep celebrating birthdays, anniversaries (both happy and sad) and to mark occasions like friends who bought a house or one who just launched a new business or those that just had a baby. I’m not doing a fantastic job; I’m tired and this is hard.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don’t get this things back. Notice them if you can, if you feel strong enough to. Remember the people you love; the days you have lived, the places you have loved. This is still our life unfolding day by day. We can still live it.

I have been lovingly called out on my post from earlier today and I’d like to issue a correction.

In my rush to 1) embarrass my child on the occasion of her 21st birthday and 2) emphasize how smart and wonderful and thoughtful and kind she is, I may have inadvertently led you believe that she is not also beautiful.

I mean, frankly, I think she looked adorable in the embarrassing photos I posted, but 🤷🏻‍♀️.

So hereI am hoping to rectify my mistake and share with you that I also think my child is A+ number one stunner.

HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY NIKA, YOU ARE BEAUTIFULLLLL 💓💓💓

Did I get it right this time??? The kids told me I do Instagram wrong. 🤣

Apple picking time! 🍎It's a great social distancing activity and it feels so good to get outside. Despite it all, mama earth still wants to heal us, to care for us, and to nurture us. Getting outside is a great reminder that there is still nature, there is still symbiosis, and there is still abundance. Everything is not lost. Get outside and help yourself heal, connect, and remember what we're fighting for! 🌿🍂

✨When my daughter was a toddler, we used to have what we called the "No, thank you bite". She could say no thank you to any food that she didn't want to eat, she just had to eat a bite of it first – that was the "No thank you!" bite. ✨
✨
✨ And, of course, more often than not, she would take the bite and decide that she liked the food after all. I liked the rule a lot because it still let her make her own choices (autonomy is tough to come by when you're two!) but it asked for her to be open before deciding. ✨
✨
✨ And.... she also turned out to have a much more wide-ranging palette than most kiddos. That's true still to this day!✨
✨
✨ So: it's fine if your instinct is to say 'no' to something new. Obviously trusting our gut is important! But maybe there are some things you could give the old "No thank you" try to. :) ✨
