Fade into Code: The Dreamlike Retreat of Nika Lynas

Whether it’s someone slowly dissolving into the ether as the weight of societal pressure consumes them or the loss of control over the personal, Nika Lynas’ [@nikalynas] art speaks for those struggling with the fragility of their flesh. Their Machine’s Confession series traverses through emotional states by communicating through the human body.

Lynas’ art doesn’t solely operate in the traditional art space; her creativity extends into words as she often explains the deeper meanings behind her art. For some, explanation kills the art. For Lynas, it gives her work new wings by creating a mythos around her art. Her piece «Absolve» investigates picking up the pieces after facing trauma while «One Night Before Odilia» speaks to the chains of purity and submissiveness that Odette endures. In «Who If Not Me», Lynas says, “This is my statement on how the externally imposed necessity of endurance turns into a latent evil, blocking the saving right to capitulate.”

This mythos surrounds itself with the internet and digital code. Sometimes this digital code acts as a negative space in which her characters fade into nothingness. Other times, the internet and digital code act as burdensome titans that slowly squeeze the hope and resolve out of her protagonists. What Lynas appears to illustrate is the multifaceted nature of the internet. At times, it can be a never-ending nightmare that disempowers the most vulnerable while in other instances the code “becomes the only safe island of empathy.”

As Generation Alpha’s very existence is defined by the Internet Age and Generation Beta is born into the evil clutches of AI and LLM, Lynas’ art is more poignant than ever. A sense of wariness is needed to protect our children of tomorrow. Agency, alienation, and a sense of self are all larger themes Lynas touches on that pose a curriculum for those trying to survive the present.
