Hi Everyone!. I am blown away. This Open Call for Black Voices has moved in a way I could never have imagined.
Thank you!! In one week, over 200,000 (!) people viewed, liked, shared, and followed to be part of this new project. And more than 600 people applied to lend their voices. This tells me something very important. We want these histories alive now. We want the people who lived them to be remembered with our full voices…. I am so deeply humbled by this response. There is something much larger moving through this work..

If you are new here, welcome. My name is Nikesha Breeze. I am an interdisciplinary artist working with Black history and Black future, guided by the truth that our ancestors are not behind us, they are with us. My work spans classical painting, sculpture, performance, and installation, weaving archives and historical reclamation into contemporary spaces.

My new immersive work, ā€œLiving Histories,ā€ will premiere at the Sydney Biennale in March 2026. Born from the first hand narratives of thousands of formerly enslaved people from the now endangered national archives, this work enlivens these histories in a monumental way. It is sculpture. It is the living sound of a hundred elders. It is monumental textile work. It is original music, voice, and live performance.

It is a Living History.

And it is only the beginning. We have launched a fundraiser to help fund this incredible work.

After the Biennale, the dream is to bring this project to the United States. To partner with organizations and communities here. To expand the audio archive with many more voices. To build a living memory vault for future generations. To honor and reveal the truth of these lives.

If you feel called to be involved, to be a reader or researcher in future iterations, or to talk about partnership reach out through the link in my bio.

I am so thrilled to finally share this news! I have been awarded a commission by YALE University through the Committee for Art Recognizing Enslavement (CARE) to create a new permanent monument at YALE. This monumental public work will acknowledge Yale’s historical roles and associations with slavery and the slave trade.
CARE’s mission is to bring forward works of art and programming that foster reflection, remembrance, discussion, learning, and healing. To be part of this work is both humbling and deeply inspiring.

At a time when these histories are being actively and purposefully erased, this kind of work and recognition becomes even more essential and important.

As part of this commission, I will spend four months as an Associate Research Scholar in Residence at the YALE School of Art, collaborating with historians, artists, and community members to imagine and design a monument that can truly hold space for remembrance and dialogue.

During this time, I will also be in residence at NXTHVN, the extraordinary arts space founded by Titus Kaphar and Jason Price. NXTHVN has become a beacon for mentorship, creativity, and community in New Haven, and I am honored to be in that environment while developing this project.

This opportunity fills me with gratitude and excitement. I cannot wait to begin this journey, to learn from everyone involved, and to share the process of building a monument that honors the past while opening space for healing and future generations

Blackness is…The Refusal to be Reduced
Curated by Nikesha Breeze

TACOMA ART MUSEUM @tacomaartmuseum on view May 18th 2024-Mar 2027

ā€œI stood at the border, stood at the edge and claimed it as central . l claimed it as central, and let the rest of the world move over to where I was.ā€ ~Toni Morrison

Historically the representation of the Black figure in Western Art and literature has been centered on the objectification, exploitation, and exotification of Blackness and the Black body. Our socio-cultural inheritance and archival collections of Western Art, would have one believe that Black people either did not exist at all in the West, or were solely shadowed figures skirting the margins of an idyllic and expansive frontier.Ā

This exhibition, titled, ā€œBlackness is. . . The Refusal to be Reducedā€ seeks to recenter the margin, bringing to focus the unique, complex, and visceral ways contemporary Black artists in the West refuse reduction and express beauty, subtlety, resilience, and connection through their work.Ā

This exhibition invites us to glimpse the ways these artists are engaging with themes of memory, materiality, marginality and generational inheritance. From the delicate use of hair to weave stories of migration, to the sound of horse bones speaking of time and memory. The Black artists in this exhibition challenge the traditional boundaries of Western Art through their poignant uses of medium, form and storytelling.Ā

I find myself In an endless stream of gratitude.
Last month’s long anticipated opening of the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park @freedommonument in Montgomery Alabama, was by far one of the most powerful, impactful and life changing moments I have experienced. A dream of my life, to contribute to such a meaningful and historic tribute. A world changing monument to the millions of lives taken by the Transatlantic and Domestic Slave Trade and to the millions who survived it. This site is absolutely one of the most important sites for all Americans to visit in their lifetimes. I am so thankful to my dearest friends and family who came from across the country to share in this powerful moment. My beautiful sons @kaibreeze__ and Samka who have seen every single step, huge love to one of my closest friends @kimgryphon and to @yohanaglobal who has been such an incredible support this last year. A deep bow to the phenomenal artist and great inspiration, Hank Willis Thomas @hankwillisthomas ( pictured with me at the Freedom Monument and his art installed at the National Memorial) And thank you to the phenomenal staff working at the @eji_org and the Freedom Monument, they are the ones supporting and sharing this work with so many people everyday. Truly deep work these folks do. šŸ™šŸ¾šŸŒ¹šŸ™šŸ¾
