Sono entrata in libreria per comprare un libro di cucina. Dopo pochi minuti avevo già visto parecchie facce. Facce che cucinano. Facce che sorridono. Facce che impastano. Facce che hanno, dettaglio interessante, moltissimi follower. Che noia.

E i libri? Bah, niente di memorabile. A sfogliarli, parecchi si assomigliano. Stesse fotografie molto belle, stessi capitoli, primavera, autunno, brunch, comfort food. Ogni tanto spunta pure il burger di quinoa. A quel punto ho chiamato un editor importante e gli ho chiesto quanto contassero i social quando si sceglie un autore. Risposta: contano. Troppo.

Eater racconta da anni che la social reach è entrata nelle valutazioni editoriali. Non esiste il numeretto magico che garantisce un contratto, ma nell’inchiesta compaiono soglie raccontate da autori e addetti ai lavori: si parte da 10mila, 20mila, 50mila follower. Negli Stati Uniti il fenomeno è ormai molto visibile: tra 125 cookbook censiti per la primavera 2026, più di 20 erano firmati da creator o influencer. Più di uno su sei.

Poi ho continuato a guardare. E per fortuna. Perché c’è Cooker Girl, che a me piace molto e sa davvero spiegare un impasto. C’è chi insegna a fare la pasta fresca come Elena Spisni. C’è Ottolenghi. C’è Niki Segnit, che ha trasformato gli abbinamenti tra ingredienti quasi in un gioco.
Ho trovato un libro cinese che avrei comprato solo per quella copertina rossa spaziale e dentro c’era pure una storia di famiglia. E pure una ricetta delle melanzane formidabile. Ho trovato Julia Child e mi è tornata voglia di cucinare francese.

Ho trovato il grande Davide Longoni.

Insomma, sono uscita dalla libreria con qualche pregiudizio in meno e parecchi libri in più nella lista degli acquisti. Ma rimane il rischio che un numero di “seguaci” pesi di più dell’idea che c’è dentro il libro.

Perché 500mila follower possono venderti un ricettario. Ma di certo non possono renderlo interessante.

本当にこの組み合わせ、美味しい😋

Well, I suppose it’s time for la rentrée. What did your summer days look like?

Mine were pretty much like this Typical, Average, Not Bad, Very Fine Day here. And they were, for the most part, glorious, sweaty, sunny, food-and laughter-filled and decently productive, too!

Ugh: I’m not ready for flannel pjs and a kid in Year 3 just yet. Please 🙏 stop.

[and yes— I know— tomatoes do NOT go in the fridge, but it was so hot and we had such bad fruit flies that leaving them on the counter was FOLLY]
