First time in Vegas. First time at @rollercon. Off skates due to knee rehabbing and dealing with some sort of cold or allergy, but still managed to have a blast! Can’t wait to come back next year and actually be able to skate!!

You can still catch the "Framing the Future" art show at @callanwoldefinearts featuring Paint Love artists, hanging in the Callanwolde gallery through June 8.

We asked every artist with a piece in the show why art is essential to them and how ensuring arts education to all youth will help "frame the future" - check out what our first five artists had to say!

“My art is messy, and my emotions are messy too - I like the match."

That’s what a @katesclub teen said in our programming Saturday. Isn’t it so true?

Paint Love Cohort Artist @nikitaraperartist and volunteers facilitated our first extraordinary art opportunity of 2022 this weekend with kids exploring their awareness of grief and how it shows up in their bodies - and how they can respond.

“Young and old people would say, I can’t do it, I’m not an artist. And I say, just do it. Take a handful of clay and form it in the space between your hands and you will find yourself in that clay... And then there is this moment of truth, the giving of consciousness to this lump of clay: making the two eyes. And they’re looking back at you. It’s a self replicating process. You’re being witnessed as you make them by the things that you have made. Every piece is of value because it is absolutely distinct.” - Antony Gormley, about his installation project, Field.

Check out the mini Field installation we created with @candaceincolor and @hmcrisis for our last session with @roswellrecandparks .

We loved getting to learn about installation art and how it impacts change through the work of Ai Wei Wei, Nick Cave, and Antony Gormley, and think about how much more we can accomplish when we come together. This incredible group decided our installation was about memory and learning from the past to create a better future.

“I wanted them to be as much about the taking of a lump of clay and taking the impression of the hands as it was a recognizable body. It was then I realized it had to be more collective... Its very rewarding to pick these up and have a conversation through touch with the maker.” See Gormley’s video at the link in our bio! And swipe to the end to see one of his collective installations.

Continuing our series learning about Black artists with Roswell Roots, last week @candaceincolor and @nikitaraperartist introduced the group to the work of Mark Bradford and his abstract assemblage maps reflecting on his community. Using the MARTA rail map as a starting point of what is, participants built out their visions of community that could be.

Here, an 11 year old envisions an Atlanta running on renewable energy where the highways are taken over by skateboarders!

Creating a grid and map then expanding beyond those confines, the group learned about how racism played/plays a role in physically shaping where and how our communities and transit lines exist and who has access to what.

We love the visions for the future they created- including being more welcoming to all, using alternative fuels, safer for animals, and full of art and music!

Masked up and ready to create! Last week kicked off our first sessions with @roswellrecandparks Roswell Roots programming! Kids and teens ages 6-14 created some really wonderful pieces. We can’t wait to see how they turn out fired in the kiln! 🔥

Want to join the fun? Enrollment is limited but still open for Thursday sessions from 5:30-7pm at Art Center West in Roswell!

In our first session, @candaceincolor and @nikitaraperartist discussed the African Diaspora and the impact of the Middle Passage on European and Indigenous pottery. We explored the influence of other cultures in artistic creation and discussed themes of influence, appropriation, and appreciation. Students created functional clay earthenware pieces and learned decoration techniques while they talked about the symbolism used in the original roots of Colonoware in the southern states.

This Thursday, we’re learning about folk art, assemblage, and Thornton Dial! Go to roswellroots.com to sign up!
