If you know, you know…

The 2017 UTEP football season tested the Miners like few others in program history. Finishing 0-12 marked the first winless campaign since 1973, but the story runs deeper than the record. Head coach Sean Kugler stepped down after an 0-5 start, leading to Mike Price’s return out of retirement as interim coach.

Standouts rose above the challenges. Senior guard Will Hernandez earned back-to-back AP All-America honors and All-Conference USA first team recognition before a second-round NFL Draft selection by the New York Giants. Linebacker Alvin Jones led with 102 tackles and had a stint in the NFL with the Ravens. Nik Needham finished the season with 8 pass breakups, 1 INT and 59 tackles. Needham would end up playing for the Miami Dolphins. Defensive moments, like Kahani Smith’s pick-six, and late offensive flashes offered glimpses of promise.

The losing streak continued into the 2018, when Dana Dimel took over as head coach. They finally broke the 20-game losing streak in November of 2018 after a win over Rice.

What do you remember about this season?

A little bit of summer. Jaylinn Hawkins and Nik Needham’s Football Camp, Angels baseball, Laughlin for Fourth of July, and putting in the work for baseball.

Buena Park High School alums now NFL veterans Nik Needham and Jaylinn Hawkins put on an amazing kids’ football camp at Buena Park High every summer - and show the kids being a professional athlete is more than just showing up for game time on Sundays - it’s putting in the work, and giving back to the communities where you came from.

Such incredible role models for our kids!

🚨 Want a more explosive upper body? Start by owning the brakes.

In this sequence, our athletes perform a 6-second eccentric isometric hold under added load before transitioning into 8-10 explosive push-ups.

Why?

🏈 Football isn’t just about producing force—it’s about controlling it first.

This drill develops:
✅ Eccentric strength to absorb force
✅ Isometric stability in key football positions
✅ Rapid force production for explosive power
✅ Shoulder and trunk stiffness for better force transfer

The result? More powerful blocks, stronger punches, and greater explosiveness on the field.

Train with purpose. Every rep should transfer to game day. ⚡

🚨 Why do we challenge our NFL athletes with advanced exercises?

Because elite athletes require elite demands.

As athletes become stronger and more coordinated, we have to increase the challenge to continue building stability, body control, and force transfer.

This drill isn’t about making it look hard—it’s about improving the ability to create and maintain tension while moving, a quality that directly transfers to sprinting, cutting, changing direction, and absorbing contact.

Train to meet the demands of your sport, not just one component. ⚡🏈

🚨 Here’s why you’re not getting faster…

You’re only training one quality.

Speed is built through a combination of power, strength, speed, and mobility. NOT just lifting weights or running sprints.

Train the demands of your sport: sprinting, jumping, reacting, decelerating, and stabilizing.

Want to dominate this fall? 🏈⚽️🥍
