the colorado trail, part 3

The end! On October 4th we walked into waterton canyon and touched the trailhead sign—the terminus for our 500mi long across hike across Colorado, from Durango to Denver. But, of course, it was never about getting to Denver. It was about spending a month hiking through some of the most incredible and rugged mountains in the country. It was about pushing our limits while simultaneously experiencing true moments of joy. And most of all, it was about the people we shared it with. Thank you to everyone who hosted us, offered us food, or gave us a ride. And most of all thank you to the wonderful people I got to spend this mouth with: Cheddar Rocket (@mariarem1), Shotgun (@nikolekulio), Pistol Pete (@colepef), and, of course, the one and only Jam (@jessmaxseg)

Day 266 Border to Border Calendar Year Triple Crown
South Cottonwood TH-Fooses Creek
35.2 miles 6361ft gain

Hit the trail around 9am this morning. It was pretty cruisy for the most part.

There were ominous clouds over the mountains for most of the day. It was just on an off sprinkle/rain but never got soaked.

We walked past the Hot Springs and it was tempting to stop in for a soak but I knew we had to keep going.

On the climb leaving the valley it rained pretty good. Ran into some CT hikers. A few more climbs before meeting @softserve.hikertrash at Shavano Campground. We planned to meet up and camp together across the next highway.

On the climb out I ran into a familiar face, @nikolekulio who I had met on other trails. It was so good to see her and stop to chat for a bit. Bummed I forgot to get a pic, but wishing her the best as she heads north on the CT🎉

Got to camp, ate dinner and called it a night.

@nikolekulio and I serendipitously reunited at a park in Montrose and then I promptly convinced her to a) move to Durango for the winter and b) do the Chicago Basin Grand Slam with me before dropping her off for the Colorado Trail.

The trip itself was beautiful, silly, hard and obviously magical. We backpacked in the day before from Purgatory and then got a nice dark 5am start on the peaks. We watched the sun rising and the alpine glow lighting the mountains around us as we neared the summit of Windom. 4 14ers and then we topped it all off with a crisp @coorslight each. I’ve been wanting to do this adventure since I moved to this area 5 years ago and finally, there I was! And there I was with a real good friend who I haven’t seen in a while and who I feel so at home in the mountains with! 🥰

these photos range almost 500 miles from here. there is no rhyme or reason to any of this, and as you can see i still love my friends more than views. i had some of the hardest days of hiking recently, and have never felt so inspired… i don’t even have a good caption to write. look how fucking cool my life is lol
