Today was a beautiful day, and little Miss Milani was feeling herself like the true diva she is! 😎💕

From the headband down to the shoes, the entire outfit was ALL her!

But today also came with a little victory worth celebrating. 🥹❤️‍🩹

For the second clinic visit in a row, we didn’t need valet parking! Milani walked all the way to the parking lot, not once, but TWICE because Mama forgot to get our parking ticket validated. 😂

Something so simple, but something she hadn’t been able to do comfortably since starting chemotherapy in April. Long clinic days used to leave her exhausted, and treatment had weakened her legs, making longer walks difficult and sometimes painful.

But lately, she’s been getting stronger, moving more, and doing so much more on her own. Seeing that progress has been such a blessing. Today was a HUGE win! 🥹💖

And a special thank you to @comfycozy4chemo @ahrangels for sending Milani with this beautiful tie-dye port-access dress!

Such a thoughtful way to help children feel comfortable during treatment while still expressing their personalities. Our little diva gets to stay fashionable even on clinic days! Thank you for all you do for children like Milani. 🫂❤️‍🩹

SIX MONTHS AGO | PART 2 ❤️‍🩹

A few hours later a group of oncologists walked toward our room and asked to speak with me privately.

I remember sitting in that tiny room with all of them looking at me.

That’s where they confirmed it.

Leukemia.

I honestly couldn’t tell you what else they said. It’s almost like my mind took me out of that room. I can hear them speaking but no words.

Until one of them said, “You can breathe.”

I took a deep breath, and suddenly I felt myself coming back.

The doctor asked, “What comes to mind hearing all this?”

“I don’t know… a St. Jude commercial.”

She nodded sadly.

“Is that what’s going to happen to her?”

I had so many questions, but none of them seemed to make sense.

“How? Are you sure? She was perfectly fine. We don’t even have cancer in our family. How can this be?”

They explained Leukemia as something a cell did wrong and the rest followed. They reassured me neither one of us did anything wrong. Even they were surprised by how healthy and happy Milani appeared.

“It’s okay everyone reacts differently”

I remember wondering if they expected me to cry or scream.

But I couldn’t.

I was still trying to understand how we’d gone from a stomachache to cancer.

They told me we were waiting for a room upstairs.

I texted my family, took a deep breath, and went back to Milani.

“Mama, what is today?”

“Friday.”

“Are we still going horseback riding tomorrow?”

My heart sank. I knew this would break her heart.

“No, Nani. I’m sorry. We have to stay here for a few days.”

She immediately started crying. She was heartbroken

“But Mama, I’ve been waiting so long! I wanted to go so bad! This is the worst day of my life!”

And that’s when I cried with her.

“Mine too, Nani. Mine too.”

Sometimes I wish I could go back in time, just for a little while. To hold her a little while smaller. To hear that tiny voice again. To see my baby Nani one more time. 🥹💖

This season has been hard in ways I never could’ve imagined, but I’m learning to look for the little pieces of good tucked inside of it.

One of those has been seeing glimpses of my baby girl again.

With her hair loss, she’s been wearing turbans again and somehow she still fits into some of the same ones she wore when she was little. Every time she puts one on, it takes me right back.

There she is. Baby Nani. 🥹

I would never choose the circumstances that brought us here, but I can still choose to find something beautiful in them.

Maybe that’s what this season is teaching me most…
the hard and the beautiful can exist at the same time. 💖

She may be seven and growing up right before my eyes, but I think a mama will always see every version of her baby when she looks at her.

Baby Nani then. Baby Nani now. Baby Nani always. 💖

Remember when Milani said she would “keep you posted” on our day? 😂

Well… she never got to finish keeping you posted.
We ended up in the ER that night with a fever, and just like that, our little recap got put on hold. ❤️‍🩹

But before our night took that turn, we had SUCH a beautiful day together.

We were so grateful to be invited by the New York Jets and American Cancer Society for a much-needed Mommy & Me relaxation day. And looking back, I’m even more grateful we got to have those hours together. 🥹🤍

We started the morning with a painting class 🎨 by @paintingonpark , moved into yoga, made friendship bracelets, enjoyed massages and a little spa time, and had lunch together.

At the end of the day, we headed back into the locker room and found personalized lockers waiting for each of us filled with the cutest Jets swag. 🥹💚

After the last few months of what has felt like a nonstop, chaotic schedule centered around treatment, having an entire day to slow down, disconnect, relax, laugh, create and just enjoy each other was SO needed.

For a few hours, we weren’t thinking about what was next. We were just Mama & Nani. 🫂💖

A huge thank you to the @nyjets and @americancancersociety for including us in such a beautiful #CRUCIALCATCHNFL experience, and to everyone who helped make the day so special. We felt so loved and cared for, and it truly meant more than you know. 🥹💚🏈

The ending to our day may not have gone exactly as planned 😅❤️‍🩹… but everything that came before it was pretty special.

Consider yourselves officially kept posted. On what Milani says was the Best Day Ever 🤩💚🏈

September is ending. Childhood cancer isn’t. 💛🎗️

The second I saw these images, I wanted to burst into tears.

It was instant , like this immediate sting straight to my heart. I didn’t just see these pictures… I FELT THEM. ❤️‍🩹

Because I’ve lived them…. we’re STILL living them!

The drive to oncology. The hospital rooms. Watching the world continue outside while yours feels like it’s standing still. Handing your baby over for another procedure. The treatments, the isolation, the exhaustion, the fear… and somehow, through all of it, watching these little humans show a kind of strength you never knew was possible.

The beads that look colorful and beautiful to everyone else, but tell a story you wish your child never had to live.

And that first image… all of those hands holding one another up just to lift one little child toward that bell. 🥺 It says so much about the village it takes to carry a child through this.

Before April, I could’ve looked at these pictures and felt sad.
Now I look at them and I understand them.

These illustrations are by Angus Olsen, a childhood cancer dad and the artist behind @idrawchildhoodcancer Somehow, he has managed to put into pictures what so many of us struggle to put into words.

As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, please remember that for families like ours, the awareness doesn’t end when September does.

The appointments continue.
The treatments continue.
The fight continues.
And so should the awareness. 🎗️♥️

September ends. Childhood cancer doesn’t.

On August 17th, I shared that Milani’s End-of-consolidation MRD was still positive. ❤️‍🩹

She had come soooo incredibly close to reaching remission. She finished at .012% and the goal was under .010% And because of her rare subtype, we knew there was a possibility we could end up here… but knowing something might happen doesn’t make it hurt any less when it actually does.

I received the news over the phone.

They explained the results and briefly told me what they believed our next step could look like. We would be referred to another hospital for a second opinion and to hear about another treatment option.

I hung up the phone and tears fell.

I was hurt. But if I’m being completely transparent, a part of me had already prepared myself for this. After so many unexpected turns throughout this journey, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there might be another one waiting for us.

So I had taken the call outside so Milani wouldn’t hear.

I hung up and looked up at the sky and prayed.

“Lord, since day one, I have asked You to please make this journey kind to her. And You have yet to fail me. She continues to amaze me after every appointment, every procedure and every treatment. I don’t understand why our road keeps changing, but I trust You. If this is where You want her to go, then this is where we’ll go.” 🙏🏼❤️‍🩹

I wiped my tears, went back inside, opened my laptop and started researching everything I possibly could.

By the time I went to bed that night, my heart was still heavy… but I felt prepared.

We were due back at clinic the next day.

And the next morning, something happened that I still think about to this day.

Something that made me feel like maybe God had heard every single word I said while I was standing outside looking up at that sky & felt how heavy my heart was. He knew I needed a sign.

I’ll share that part next. ❤️‍🩹

Now you KNOW a Baldy wasn’t gonna dim her glam 😂✨

One thing about Milani… childhood cancer and leukemia treatment may have taken her hair, but they NEVER took her glam. 😂💖

Now that her little post-chemo hair is starting to grow back, sis has officially brought out the brush AND the mirror. Every little centimeter counts! 🥹♥️

P.S. Rumor has it… we’re still waiting on I-19 to be called. 😂
