Day 1 → Today. Same player. Same stride. More development. 🏒

This is the same player from my original “Same Player. Different Strides” post.

And this is exactly why I say development is never one correction, one drill, or one session.

The stride improved — so we kept going.

We kept refining the extension.
We kept cleaning up the recovery.
We kept working on body position, balance, control, and how efficiently he moves through the ice.

Because getting “better” isn’t the finish line.

The details still matter, if not more than ever as the game gets faster. The faster the game moves, the more important it becomes that those mechanics, habits, and foundations hold up under speed.

The basics still matter. The details still matter. And as the player develops, the standard should continue to rise with them.

Development is a process. Build it. Refine it. Keep going.

Develop the player, not just the drill.

Summer 2026🏒

What a summer.

So many hours on the ice. So many reps off the ice. Conversations about fueling, recovery, training, mindset, and what it really takes to continue developing as an athlete.

But more than anything, this summer was about development at every level.

From building the foundations with a developing player to refining the smallest details with an elite athlete every stage matters.

It can be easy to look at an already-developed player and focus on the small adjustments that may help make them more efficient.

But there is something equally important about starting with the basics teaching a player how to understand their edges, control their body, build efficient movements in range of motions, and then continuing to layer those skills as they grow.

Those foundational pieces aren’t less advanced. They’re what eventually allow the advanced pieces to happen.

And that’s one of my favorite parts of coaching meeting players where they are and helping them build from there.

Because we aren’t cookie cutters of each other. Players move differently, learn differently, and develop at different rates. Their training shouldn’t all look the same either.

Whether we’re working on skating mechanics, off-ice movement, reaction and coordination, performance nutrition, recovery, or simply learning the why behind the work, each piece contributes to the bigger picture.

From the basics to the elite level, the goal remains the same:

Develop the player. Not just the drill.

I’m incredibly grateful for every player and family who trusted me to be a small part of their development this summer. There were a lot of skates, a lot of laughs, a lot of learning, and some pretty incredible progress along the way.

Summer 2026 was a good one.

Precision. Power. Performance.

Same player. Different stride. 👇

POV: Stride development in progress

⭐️REMINDER
players are constantly developing

Before:

Short extension usually means players think moving their feet fast = moving fast.

Wide recovery.
Too much skate mobility.
Stomping which takes energy and sends it in the wrong direction.

These are some of the most common issues I see in players.

There’s a lot more that goes into creating an efficient stride than most people realize.

It takes time, detail, and building new habits.

After:
We slowed everything down.

Got his skates to become one with his foot and working with him not against him.

Focused on recovery.

Built understanding between stomping vs gliding.
Short leg ext. vs. long leg ext.

Now?
Control.
Extension.
Efficiency.

He doesn’t skate like an elephant.

His ice coverage has increased on the ice and is now gliding on the ice like a rock skipping water.

That’s where real speed comes from.

Way to go Nick!
