Most athletes lose NIL deals not because of their following or their sport, but because of avoidable mistakes that brands notice immediately. Brands move fast, and they are evaluating far more than talent. They are looking at how prepared an athlete is, how professional the outreach feels, and whether there is any indication that this athlete will follow through. A single gap in that process is often the difference between a deal and silence. What separates athletes who consistently land partnerships from those who do not usually has nothing to do with their stats or their following. It comes down to preparation, professionalism, and persistence. The athletes earning the most right now are not necessarily the most talented ones. They are the ones who treat NIL like the business it actually is. Swipe through to see where most athletes are losing deals without even realizing it.

Coaching, playing time, and academics are still the foundation of any recruitment decision, and that’s not changing. But in 2026, they’re no longer the whole picture. Revenue sharing, NIL access, and market size now factor into what your four years actually look like financially, and most athletes don’t think about any of it until it’s too late. Before you commit, it’s important to know: ✅ How much does this program pay in revenue sharing ✅ Does my division even allow revenue sharing ✅ What is the NIL market like in this area ✅ What have athletes in my sport earned here ✅ What does the local brand landscape look like Revenue sharing only applies to D1 under the House settlement, but NIL applies at every level. A D2 athlete in a major market can out earn a D1 athlete at a small program. Hold true to your non negotiables. Just make sure revenue sharing, NIL market size, and earning potential by sport are part of the conversation too.
