The Curious Drinker September Box

Tarsier Cloud Forest Gin

I said previously that Tarsier isn't a new Distillery for me, but it was good to discover a bit more about it. Co-founders Tim Driver and Sherwin Acebuche, (who was awarded Beverage Innovator of the Year in 2025,) were backpacking in SE Asia in 2015 when they were inspired to develop a gin based on the flavours of the area. Once back in Manchester, they set about experimenting until they came up with a gin they were happy with.

They named it Tarsier, after the little Philippine primate with the big eyes, which they donate 10% of their profit to conservation charities to protect. The original bottle was nice, but they've since upgraded to this gorgeous new one.

The dry kampot pepper, Thai sweet basil, galangal and calamansi in that gin was too spicy a blend for me, but this Cloud Forest is a new expression. Its spicy elements are more on the peppery and aromatic side than the heat that bothers me, and it's balanced by citrussy notes. I'm not sure it's a neat drinker for me, but I do rather like it.

I made the G&T as suggested, with 50ml Tarsier Cloud Forest Gin and 150ml Mallows Mixers Tonic Water. It's in my Nude Glass Copa with the provided dried dragonfruit slices to garnish.

I enjoyed this. It has plenty of flavour and the tonic softens the bolder notes without overwhelming them.

I also made the Mandarin & Tamarind Old Fashioned, with 50ml Tarsier Cloud Forest Gin, 25ml cocktail syrup, 5ml honey and an orange peel garnish.

Now I play around with riffs on an old fashioned quite often, but I find the ones that I prefer have something that either completely contrasts with or replicates the warmth and depth of the traditional ones. This was more something in between, so it was nice, but not quite as interesting as I'd hoped.

I served them with the Taste of Game Wild Duck & Plum Sauce Crisps, which were great and will definitely encourage me to check out the rest of their range if I get the chance.

Talking of checking out a range, I noticed that Tarsier also have an Oolong Tea Old Tom out, which sounds right up my street, so I'll be keeping my eye out for a bottle of that some time too.

The Curious Drinker September Box
What's in the Box

Tarsier Cloud Forest Gin

The September Gin of the Month from The Curious Drinker is Tarsier Gin. That isn't a new Distillery for me, but this Cloud Forest is a new gin. I've tried Tarsier previously and haven't been keen as they had too much spice in them for me. But this one sounds like it may be less so, I'm hopeful that I will like it. And if I don't, there's a good chance Nic will. Anyhow, we'll find out when I get the bottle open and some drinks made on Saturday. For now, let's get back to what else is in the box.

For the G&T we have with Mallows Mixers Tonic Water and Nims Dragonfruit garnish anx for the Cocktail of the Month - a Mandarin & Tamarind Old Fashioned - we just have the cocktail syrup.

There are two other drinks, a Nexba Mango Kombucha, and The Curious Drinker's own non-alcoholic Passionfruit & Vanilla Martini, from their new range of cocktails and mocktails.

We do have an abundance of snack though, with Taste of Game Wild Duck & Plum Sauce Crisps, Love Corn Sea Salted Roasted Corn, Gusto Salted Caramel Popcorn, The Dormen Salted Peanuts and Lindt Choco Wafers.

🌍 Every year, the UK wastes 4.4 million tonnes of perfectly edible food, costing roughly £17 billion and creating around 12 million tonnes of carbon emissions.

For #FoodWasteActionWeek, we are highlighting the amazing local businesses that have our back when it comes to tackling food waste.

Nimisha Raja MBE, founder of Sittingbourne-based @nimsnaturally, already produces fantastic air-dried fruit and veg crisps. But she faced a common manufacturing hurdle: what to do with containers of surplus crisps that were costing money to store?

Instead of sending them to the bin, Nimisha used a #GrowingGreen grant to buy a specialist food grinder. This kit transforms the surplus into 100% natural fruit and vegetable powders. 🍎✨

Now, those upcycled powders account for 7-8% of the company's revenue. They are even being used to create custom blends for major brands like @wearezizzi and to supply other innovative local start-ups.

It is a brilliant reminder that sustainability doesn't mean sacrifice, it can be a serious springboard for growth. 📈♻️

What a wonderful open day at @lakehousekent yesterday.

Their stunning space and grounds were opened up to showcase the retreat facilities - and the incredible practitioners who work there, offering massage, reiki, meditation, soundscapes, physiotherapy and so much more.

I had the pleasure of running a non-alcoholic cocktail bar for the day. It was such a joy to meet so many lovely people - creating drinks, sharing conversations, and seeing genuine curiosity around alcohol-free. There was real delight in discovering just how layered and complex these drinks are, and the variety that’s out there!

A huge thank you to the fabulous @samgriffinpublicspeaker and The Lake House team for having me.

And a special mention to:
Hydrotherm Massage by @ben_barnett_htbb for the very relaxing Hydrotherm massage (just what my back needed)
And to @iner.chi for a wonderfully immersive and meditative soundscape session, something that really surprised me - I’m not good at relaxing, but found this sooo wonderful! 👏🏻👌🏻

If you’d like to join me in making your own alcohol-free cocktails at Lake House Kent, we have an event booked for 29th May (see eventbrite link in bio and comments) we’d love to see you there 🍹🍸

Popped in to see our @fenwickofficial display today. Gave it a little re-gig and restock ready for the weekend. Still crazy that the boxes I was once making in the shed are on the shelves in Fenwick 😜
