Today is Sam’s first birthday.

I think we knew the second we saw him sitting in the middle of the road that he was ours. We knew again when we got him to my mom’s and he melted into us. Even though he was afraid and confused and had frostbitten paws, I think he knew, too. And we knew it was meant to be when Ghost decided she loved him just as quickly as we did.

Sam is the best thing that could have ever happened to our family. He loves everyone and everything. Except flies. And leaves that he thinks are flies. I love his extra toes and little squishy chin and glowy eyes. I love the way he watches TV and picks on Ghost and forces himself under our blankets. Because all he wants is to be as close to you as possible. I love his weird husky noises and the way he boops the backs of your legs when you’re walking and his wiggly excited tappy toe dance he does every time he sees us. I love everything about Sam and I couldn’t imagine our life without him.

Happy Birthday baby dog.

2025 sure as hell wasn’t my favorite year, but some of my favorite things happened. Like doing a cross-country road trip with my mom and Willow — twice, marrying the finest man on the planet, and saving our newest little chicken noodle from the cold ass streets of Indiana.

I also hit 532 in Yahtzee the other day so things are lookin’ up.

Alright get me the fuck out of the year of the snake.

Marry the person that surprises you with a seat for your dad at your ceremony. The person that makes a pitstop between celebrations so you can have your first dance in your living room, just the two of you. The person that picks out a new last name with you just for your little family. Marry your best fucking friend. It’s the greatest thing I’ve ever done.

Thank you for capturing our love on film, @maxine.sferra.photo. Narrowing down so many incredible photos for this post felt criminal.
